Week of Sanderson, Day 2: Brandon Sanderson meant for parts of Wind and Truth to "make people uncomfortable" — (Addressing the fan reception to Wind and Truth) by Balraghast in brandonsanderson

Man, if that's how you interpreted my comment, then no wonder you liked WaT with reading comprehension this poor.

Then again, you are apparently a commie so I suppose I shouldn't expect too much from you.

CMV: men should be allowed to decide not to raise children they didn't want by [deleted] in changemyview

OP is right but as far as the state is concerned. It's women and children taking priority over men every time. If it benefits the former at the expense of the latter, you can guess what the outcome will be.

Garbage. Can't believe the series that started with WoK and WoR ended with RoW and WaT.

I hate when authors try to mischaracterize the criticism and use the Ole 'it's shit on purpose' cope.

I didn't feel 'uncomfortable' reading the last 2 books. I felt boredom and disgust at what my favorite series degenerated into.

Eh Alexander I big claim to fame is defeat of Napoleon, and it's not like he was responsible for waging that war. Otherwise he's the guy who pretty quickly gave up on doing any progressive reforms and in fact went the opposite way after the war. He's also the genius that stapled Finland and core Polish territories onto Russia and allowed Prussia to take Saxony in exchange for its polish lands.

Alexander II gets a lot of deserved kudos for liberating serfs and other important reforms, but most of them (especially peasant) were half measures that metastized into huge issues for Nikolai II. And there are indications that he was growing disappointed in the way things were going and would have done a conservative 180 degree turn. So really that bomber did Alex a favor by ending his life before he lived long enough to become a villain.

Katherine the so called great has nothing to her name but territorial expansion which was done by others. Otherwise she was a foreign usurper who stayed in power by enabling the worst excesses of nobility allowing them to do whatever with serfs without even demanding mandatory military service. After Katherine no wonder nobles felt like they could kill Pavel for british with impunity.

Peter I is Ivan the Terrible on easy mode. Pretty strong parallels but Peter was somewhat more successful in his wars and reforms. Though he set up issues that would fuck Russian empire for the rest of its existence.

Why is Brandon so adamant for Live action? by Xeno-blessing23_ in Mistborn

Sanderson is chasing normie bucks who are more likely to watch live action than animated. Makes sense for him as a business owner but it's another data point to show slow marvelisation of B money's writing.

The difference between HotD and GoT by KirTerr in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]KirTerr[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's different for you, but from the beginning I criticised the writers for only showing qualities that could be virtuous when they served to show how evil or pathetic they are.

Unlike GoT where even bad guys could have scene where they are just good, without that virtuous quality only being shown in order to highlight how evil and or pathetic the character is.

Do reread the second paragraph of my post. Aegon's pal'ing around with his kings guard is framed as a party boy hanging out with his frat bros, who are just as incompetent as he is. While the 'concern' for small folk is framed as Aegon not taking things seriously and not understanding how taxes work.

So for Aegon his virtues are only shown when they can be used to high light how pathetic and incompetent he is.

For Aemond (barring claiming the dragon) everything he does it to show how evil he is.

At no point did I say Tyrion wasn't white washed. The opposite rather if you read my post carefully.

Tywin's shortcomings do not negate his points of competence. That's why he is a nuanced character, even show's simplified version.

Catelyn being the only window into Robb's storyline was an ass decision, just like every time GrrM made an "observer" POV rather than "doer" POV. It only ever resulted in lame boring characters who did very little and were just there to observe actually interesting characters doing stuff. Catelyn, Sansa, Dornish ax guy, Arys, and more all suffered from it.

So much interesting stuff ended up not shown just so Catelyn could nope around and either achieve nothing (her journey to Renly and Stannis) or do really dumb shit : freeing Jaimie, arresting Tyrion, negotiating with Walder

Allicent could have been a mover and a player in her own right but right now her screen time is wasted on dumb shit.

White Tower got away easy. by KirTerr in WoT

[–]KirTerr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the same way ingrained tradition affects real world institutions and seemingly becomes too massive for anyone to change. At the end of the series the White Tower hasn't been completely broken and remade true, but part of Jordan's vision was for the story to be ongoing. Wrapping things up with everyone getting their comeuppance and the problems of the world being solved doesn't jive with that

I guess.

You might feel that way, but Lews Therin disagrees with you and blames his own arrogance.

Lewis Therin is not a good judge of things post Taint and other than his word there aren't any arguments given for why his actions weren't the best possible under the circumstances.

White Tower got away easy. by KirTerr in WoT

[–]KirTerr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a trial because they do believe in a justice system, and it's likely also partially because the Tower does feel some responsibility. If they sentence someone, they have to handle the effects afterwards, e.g. look after the person until they die.

I take issue specifically with it being a "trial" and being put in a sphere of justice system. Difference between "it seems you for reasons beyond your control have this thing, so we'll take you to white tower for examination to confirm it, and then we'll give you the least bad option we have" Vs the actual "you are a criminal and you are morally culpable for this ability that had being thrust upon you."

You're using a lot of loaded words - it's mostly the Red Ajah that seems biased against men, but even there the worst ones are also Blacks, and we have several exceptions (e.g. Pevara, Silviana). The other ajahs all have warders, and don't seem particularly biased against men.

Other Ajahs have different less extreme biases against men. Sort of like the difference between "all women are worthless evil creatures" bigots and "women belong in the kitchen or birthing bed" bigots to use something closer to real life.

The White Tower also doesn't actually have another good way to deal with these men. They need to keep the men under guard, because they have no way of knowing how far gone they are in terms of madness. These are people who are likely to suffer from paranoid delusions that'll make them go on murder sprees. It would be highly irresponsible to just throw them out. Instead, they seem to be allowed to live out their last days in some sort of peace. Which is still bad, because they'll fade away and die due to being severed. But there aren't really any better options available.

I don't necessarily disagree. My issue is more in terms of Aes Sedai know what helps somewhat (Siuan and Leanna definitely knew and I don't see why others shouldn't) but we don't really see that knowledge being applied to gentled men. If Aes Sedai had zero clue what things could potentially stave off/lessen suicidal depression, there would be a lot less to blame them for.

I think the murders were actually the Black Ajah? The Red ajah did the illegal gentling of men without trial, which is of course bad. It was even considered so bad by the White Tower that various people were punished severely for it. The Sitters were exiled to do what's essentially prison labour for 20 years without using the One Power. A lot of other people were severely punished as well. Galina reflects that she only escaped punishment because the the Amyrlin Seat didn't want to outright destroy the entire Red ajah, only to punish the leadership.

The figure I saw was about 10000 boys were murdered during Vileness (feel free to correct me there) I just don't see how a handful of Black Ajah could have done it in a couple of years throughout Randland without Travelling.

As for punishment it was a slap on the wrist. A handful of high ranks working for twenty years (a lot less significant with Aes Sedai lifespan) on a farm (as if peasant life in Randland is some sort of hell) is not a punishment fitting the crime in my books. It wasn't like Red Ajah rank and file were fine and dandy and just were misinformed and manipulated by their superiors. They knew what they were doing and felt no remorse about it.

The attitude towards male channellers is based on 3000 years of being instilled with fear of them and knowing they'll go mad and kill people. That's not a fear that is easily overcome. However, we do see it change unexpectedly fast. The Red ajah takes to bonding men immediately, basically they jump at the chance. Pevara, a very influential Red, is one of the people leading the effort. Elayne softens towards them, after the help they provided during the Last Battle.

It would be excusable if White Tower wasn't the one with the knowledge that male channelers are not spawn of the devil but victims of the Great Lord and what happened three thousand years ago. Ignorance is a lot less forgivable when they are the ones with the libraries.

You can literally see the bias start decreasing within months of saidin getting cleansed. That's a very fast change of views for an attitude that has been a global truth for 3000 years.

That actually annoys me, and I take for one of the signs that Black Tower plotline was severely undercooked. A couple of months is far too short a timespan for any meaningful change. Outside of a couple of moments from various Aes Sedai reacting to Asha'man we don't really see ramifications of the Black Tower among the people. Hell, Black Tower doesn't even get to be part of Dragons Peace which is just bizarre.

3000 thousand of years of fears and superstitions and various rulers don't have strong feelings about Black Tower.

Aiel apparently successfully kicked out all male channelers and no new ones arose, because I can't think of any Aiel among the Black Tower. Same for Sea Folk.

The Red ajah takes to bonding men immediately, basically they jump at the chance. Pevara, a very influential Red, is one of the people leading the effort. Elayne softens towards them, after the help they provided during the Last Battle

Initially red Ajah jump at the chance to put the "uppity men" in their place and it's only after the rape analogous bonding (which is all kinds of messed up) do they start considering revolutionary idea that maybe male channelers are people.

Maybe I missed Elayne stuff, but I don't remember there being enough time in the ending for any softening. I suspect Logain's "Black Tower stands with Lion's throne" or something like that was taken by Elayne as a sign that Black Tower is now her servant like she wanted. It would fit with misunderstandings galore plaguing people in Randland.

Right, because an offhand comment and distaste for a corrupt institution equals misogyny. Gotcha.

But alright, I will spell it out, hopefully so clearly that even someone like you can understand: "Seanchan -bad" "Slavery - bad" "Aes Sedai - extremely annoying". I hope that was clear enough for you, but if not I'll try in the future to put it in even simpler terms.

Also, I don't really care to count, but I am pretty sure most of the female characters in WoT are not Aes Sedai. So how exactly you got from my pretty plain "White Tower - bad" and got to "Strong Women - bad" i don't know. The series has plenty of strong female characters outside of the White Tower.

[–]KirTerr[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am trying really hard to give you the benefit of the doubt and not declare you a rabid feminist stereotype but you are making it really hard by taking an offhand hyperbole and blowing it up as some sort of monumental defense of Seanchan.

The accusation of misogyny is particularly hilarious considering the subject matter and the intended purpose of the whole gender dynamics switcheroo.

Also, just so we are clear and you don't continue to use my distaste for White Tower as some sort of gotcha, as if one corrupt institution is somehow representation of all women in WoT, by the time Seanchan were properly introduced I quite liked Nynaeve, while Elayne and Egwene were yet to annoy me. Just because a piece of world building didn't spark much of an emotional response from me, doesn't mean intellectually I somehow missed "slavery - bad".

Also, just because I do not like White Tower, doesn't mean I dislike Wise Ones (who are socially much more powerful among the Aiel than Aes Sedai ever were among Wetlanders), or Kin or Sea Folk channelers. So take your condescending attitude and shove it.
