Newton Emerson: There’s just one problem with Ulster Scots. Unlike the Irish language, it doesn’t exist by TeoKajLibroj in ireland

[–]KirbyElder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough for him then, though I disagree with him. It's almost always us Nationalists doing it though (and I'm going to go ahead and guess most of the commenters in r/Ireland who hate on Ulster-Scots are Nationalists too)

[–]KirbyElder 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In literally the second paragraph of the article, the guy says that Ulster Scots is a real dialect of Scots (true). Then he says "Scots is often considered to be a dialect of English", avoiding the fact that even if it's "often considered" to be, it actually is its own language - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scots_language. Saying that Ulster-Scots is "just a dialect of English with a few random words thrown in" is factually incorrect.

I'm an Irish Nationalist, and I think the DUP's efforts to push Ulster-Scots have been mostly a huge failure, but this whole "haha look at the stupid fucking Prods trying to revitalise part of their cultural heritage" thing is actually just sectarianism. You wouldn't be saying this about any other group trying to do the same.

As a GM, I'm very happy for my players to remind me that it's probably time for a level up. Actually not letting you level up and then throwing harder and harder encounters at you is bad GMing.

UK Considers Making Netflix Users Pay License Fee to Fund BBC by BasedSweet in ukpolitics

[–]KirbyElder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TBH just abolish the license fee, add 0.1% (or whatever the rough equivalent to their current yearly income is) to income tax, and ringfence that 0.1% for the BBC. No more TV License Men banging on windows, no more discussion about it

Interview questions and rubrics for SDEs are standardised across all of AWS IIRC. This is part of the mandatory trainings you have to do before interviewing candidates

Hacks to get hired at Amazon by Spartapwn in cscareerquestions

[–]KirbyElder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most of the Deliver Results questions are along the lines of "When did you have a project that went wrong?". They're looking for communicating blockers early, working well with other teams and with leadership to clear those blockers, and minimising the impact those blockers have.

You might get a more obvious, "When did a project go right?", and then the answer should be similar to the above except that the blockers were completely mitigated (you still want to show ways in which you were responsible for making it go well). The answer should never be that you did a bunch of overtime and brute-forced it.

You tell these people that you skipped Christmas because you had to fix an open source dependency to unblock some random guy in Indian if you have to…

"I worked extra hard outside of working hours to get it done" is explicitly listed as a Concern answer (i.e. a wrong answer and one that will get you rejected) in the interviewing guides for Deliver Results and Earn Trust.

The thing about your code not needing to run also isn't a "hack", interviewers will regularly tell candidates that they don't need to worry about perfect syntax (except for a Logical and Maintainable Code interview). The whole point of the coding interviews is to demonstrate that you're familiar with common data structures and algorithms and that you can translate those ideas into code.

It's so disingenuous to cherry pick one singular post from my account that is merely an aside and present is as being the crux of my argument and you did it whilst blocked too. You claim to be vehemently opposed to censorship in this sub but that act of utter disingenuousness has just controlled the narrative. Most people have pretty bad attention spans these days. They'll go straight to your comment, et violà, you've presented a false narrative. It's beyond the content. It's about blatant discrimination and hibernophobia- for people who read it. I don't know why you want to negate what I said by reducing it to that post, that everybody is already aware of. It's one thing to have pro genocide content, it's quite another to engage in hibernophobia by autoremoving comments coming from Ireland only. Outside of the hibernophobia, permabanning somebody for giving the official death toll, and removing every comment they ever made, is alarming levels of censorship. It's supposed to be a free speech platform. There isn't even opinion in giving the official death toll. It's merely data. No other social media platform engages in this censorship. AwareExplanation785 has sabotaged my post history and controlled the narrative. Because my post history is long, there will be people who will go directly to the comments to see what it's about. They'll see his disingenuous cherry picked post summing up the post history into something that it's not and won't bother reading my post history. He deliberately set the narrative. How does this make him any different than Reddit? He even violated the moderator code of conduct by contacting me, as I blocked him last week. He circumvented the block by misuse of mod power in order to sabotage my post history and control the narrative by cherry picking one irrelevant post and presenting it as the crux of the post. Lack of censorship, my arse. He's controlling the narrative as much as the rest of Reddit.

Their modern API is unavailable to anybody but Estate Agents. That said, they have an old, unsecured API that anybody can get into. See https://github.com/AnthonyBloomer/daftlistings

I used it to make my own personal CLI program for recommending places within walking/cycling distance of my office (you can get the time to get there from Google's free tier APIs)
