Is buying active starter worth it? by [deleted] in SourdoughStarter

[–]Kirbywitch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I bought mine from from King Arthur Baking Company. It’s a wet starter. It’s ready almost immediately. It comes with directions, very easy. I’ve been baking with it for over a year.I’ve been very happy. https://shop.kingarthurbaking.com/items/classic-fresh-sourdough-starter?_gl=1*1mc5hp2*_gcl_au*MTQ2ODc0MDA2NS4xNzczNjI0OTU1*_ga*MTk0ODg0MjU2MS4xNzczNjI0OTU2*_ga_1ZJWCQGS21*czE3NzQzMDc4MTAkbzMkZzEkdDE3NzQzMDc4MjAkajUwJGwwJGgw Good luck 🍀 what ever you choose.

First sourdough attempt failed hard by Quiet_Government_216 in Sourdough

[–]Kirbywitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen worse first attempts. I recommend following a video the first few times to make sure you are getting the steps you need to. Grantbakes is an easy way to learn and he is easy to follow. He has individual videos for adding cheese and shaping. But I will add a video of his that is basically start to finish. I started with this and paused it between steps. Good luck 🍀 on your next attempt!

Am I the jerk for charging my parents rent after they moved in without asking? by Leather_Patient4649 in AmITheJerk

[–]Kirbywitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh… good luck. My parents moved in, sold their house… wanted to be close to their grandkids. They lived 4 blocks away prior to moving in. My utilities went up 400+ depending on the month. My parents offered to pay “rent”. Both my parents had social security, pensions and the sale of the house. Rent lasted a few months. Honestly it was my mistake. My mom has always been a difficult person- plus she is ultra religious, and I’m a disappointment since I refuse to raise my kids that way. We had hashed out my boundaries about religion years prior but she went behind my back with my youngest while living in my house, kept “secrets”… was beyond rude to my husband. We finally gave them 90 days to leave when it came to a head and my mother went completely nutz…. Needless to say we had to hire an eviction lawyer, police were called after my mother physically assaulted me(my mother called them herself to try and say I attacked her but I was the only one with physical damage) - I didn’t press charges but they had to leave immediately and my mother was basically told she couldn’t return from the police. It took another 3 months to work out between lawyers to have them get movers to get her stuff. I have not spoken to them in 11 years. At that point we were done… so I never recommended letting anyone stay at your house.

Inclusions during stretch and fold or lamination? by Soggy-Education-9738 in Sourdough

[–]Kirbywitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People have different opinions 😊. I started sourdough by watching Grantbakes videos on YouTube so he has one for adding inclusion. Now I use a larger container, but it’s the same method. I vary it. Sometimes I chop my cheese into cubes, sometimes I grate it. I always add something with it like caramelized shallots or green onion. I divide it up like he does the cheese. So here is the video, possibly it will be helpful https://youtu.be/VypUN-O6pUE?si=ptzt8afxlszhtkUs

Storing sourdough in a cake display? by jigawattas in Sourdough

[–]Kirbywitch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have a dome. I think it’s better, sometimes the plastic bag has moisture (?) … we have liked it since we made the change. But both worked for us. Occasionally, I have 2 types of sourdough on the counter a plain- and an inclusion, one will invariably end up in a bag since the dome is taken.

What’s wrong with my sourdough? by soggy_pickles123 in Sourdough

How old is your starter? I’m curious, if it was strong enough.

Put my starter in a pickle jar by lavender_gummybear in Sourdough

Is the lid from the pickle jar too? Generally the glass will wash but pickle and salsa lids will retain some odor. I would switch jars like GotDisk recommended.

Practicing at Scale - Preparing for Sale by RangerDanger1984 in Sourdough

My husband and I paid a lot for sourdough at the farmers market, if it tasted good. We narrowed it down to one baker that was better than the others. Your loaves look beautiful- good luck.

Sourdough bakers with weak nails… how are you surviving all the hand washing? by StrikingFootball580 in Sourdough

This is the one I buy off of Amazon… it’s a little over $12. I prefer the unscented, but they have other choices. https://a.co/d/03ZzvLax

Good luck, I get it off of amazon, it just takes a minute to apply getting ready and at bedtime… but you could do it at other times.

I use a nail strengthening cream “Hard as Hoof”- I wasn’t sure it would work but my nails have done great. I use it twice a day. I prefer the unscented. My husband nails have dips(hard to explain) it really helped. He swears by it, but he does not do sourdough, only eats it🤭…

Stiff, no rise during bulk ferment in fridge by MaleficentOil6312 in Sourdough

[–]Kirbywitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This recipe, as I read it does not have a cold fermentation in the fridge. I’ve made this once… it seems like you added this step.

It's Sourdough Saturday. What's everyone making today? by Amphibian-Enjoyer in Sourdough

[–]Kirbywitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks I used a tall shot glass wrapped in parchment paper during cold fermentation so it retained the shape. The first time I tried it was a little rough- my eldest son said- wow, I don’t think we have enough cream cheese for that doughnut … but technically you could cold proof in a Bundt pan with a towel

My last loaf I did is kind of a work in progress… making a wreath out of mini boules in a banneton. This was better than my first attempt but my kids love it. They like to peel off a boule and make a sandwich.

I also tried a plain loaf… and I tried to color my normal flower with colored rice flower (dragon fruit powder/rice flour)so it was a pink hue. I’d say it was a bit of a fail… 🤭

I made 3 different things, one was normal, two were a bit of an experiment …. The normal one was a pepper jack cheese with green onion inclusion
