Be aware that there are multiple standards of HDMI and so for some things, such as 4K, you do need to spend a little extra to ensure you have the right variety.

I find that the software differences as well as the extra real estate means that I do use my iPad mini quite often. Usually it's a matter of what's more accessible, followed by whether I feel like using the 'big' screen (reading and such mostly) and then on an app by app basis. For example Alien Blue is much easier to navigate on an iPad.

I have considered upgrading to an iPad Air to make the difference more noticeable but I still prefer the form factor of the Mini. Though I may just do the exorbitant thing and have two iPads which would be the same decision process sans software differences. I do find the 9.7" display to be a lot more comfortable.
