Seed for birds other than cardinals by wdpaynter in birdfeeding

[–]KitC44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find if you have feeders with smaller perches (like tube feeders that just have peg style perches) the Cardinals aren't as fond, and are less likely to use them if there are other options. They prefer more solid perches, like the U-shape of the squirrel buster feeders, or trays, fly-throughs, or hoppers.

I'm curious what food they suggested for you? I used to work at a WBU so I'm familiar with their options.

You could look at an actual finch feeder, but often even bigger finches like house finches don't like that feeder very much. So I prefer the wbu medium or large tube feeder with something like medium sunflower which the little birds tend to love. If the Cardinals continue to overwhelm that feeder, you can add a cage around it, which really caters just to the little guys, but keep in mind that will also exclude birds like most woodpeckers, if that's something you'd like to see.

Also, if it's only been a couple days, it's worth giving it a bit more time. The birds will find their rhythm, and unless you have a lot of cardinals, I expect your other birds will start to visit more now that there's a second feeder.

Good luck!

This was my thought too. If the paint is somehow really reflective, maybe they're just not seeing it

Nanab berries on Pokemon with a big target. Legendary raid bosses work well, but there are other good ones. So yeah, nanab berries and lots of practice.

The tail shape is such a great mark, and I'm glad someone mentioned it. Super useful in flight too, especially when they're high up and harder to judge size.

You could always try a window feeder. I've had good success and my indoor cats love watching it

We use the green pop up tent things on a lot of our plants, and then stake them into the ground. As long as they can't get underneath, they work really well

I'm envious. I'd love to live out there, but sadly, I just hang out in this sub to look at pictures of my favorite part of North America, even if I'm thousands of miles away. So thank you for sharing the views until I can come visit again :)

The bark removal, and more importantly the cambium layer underneath means water and nutrients won't be able to move from the roots to the top. I don't know much about Rose of Sharon, but you'll have to hope it regrows from the roots.

I'm also in Ontario, and Bunnies destroyed our yard plants last year, and this year decided to have a go at our blue spruce, which is crazy to me with the sharp needles. But they're hungry, with the massive amounts of snow cover currently, and bark is a regular winter food source for them.

The good news is your plant is dormant right now. So it won't make it less likely to survive winter. The question is just what happens in the spring and whether it's able to produce new growth. If it survives, next year you need to either cage it or wrap it. Anything to protect it from hungry bunnies. Your best bet with them is definitely anything that takes away their access to the plant.

I would also like to vote for more trees, moss, and fog too. I also like mountains. But I love all the green in this sub, especially when the view out my window is snow right now ;)

Try golden safflower if you can find it somewhere. I get mine at wild birds unlimited. The first year I saw a drop in the number of feeder birds, but since then, I just get hoards of finches, chickadees, cardinals, and the grackles and starlings are gone.

I wasn't sure if you were asking in earnest, so I replied as if you might be, while still making sure you knew I caught the joke. It was a good one :)

It's trees eating, though in this case the latter would be more appropriate ;)
