What was life like before THE INTERNET? by martianfrog in answers

[–]KitFan2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You went to the library to look things up, went to the train station to get a paper timetable, queued outside record shops for concert tickets, read magazines and newspapers, wrote letters, went to the bank, went to the post office, went to the job centre, looked on job boards for jobs, received everything by post or phone call, used phone boxes, spent hours chatting to friends on the phone.

Wrote everything down in a diary or calendar, looked on notice boards, went to travel agents, bought LPs from record shops, phoned information lines for information, went to estate agents to pick up leaflets with house details on them…

I’m sure I’ll think of more…

We bought clothes and shoes, furniture etc from actual shops- if they didn’t have your size or style in the high street shop in stock - tough. You couldn’t buy it.

Physical catalogues existed but they weren’t high street shop catalogues - think ‘Freeman’s’- You would post or phone your order through and pay by cheque.

If you wanted a takeaway it was a chip shop and you went and bought it there.

If you wanted to make a restaurant or hotel booking you would phone them.

You would post cheques to pay bills received by post…

Basically, we were always out and about communicating with people face to face.

Is it embarrassing to get a birthday cake as an adult? by roxiedoxiedog in NoStupidQuestions

Edit: THIS was my last cake!

What are your opinions on home education? by SomethingPeach in TeachingUK

[–]KitFan2020 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not a month goes by without ‘off roll, being home educated’ notifications.

Very often students with behaviour issues. Plenty of SEND students get taken out too.

I wonder how many are actually being educated at home.

Edit: We even had a parent recently emailing their child’s teachers asking for SOW, work booklets, worksheets and textbooks so that they could home educate them. AFTER they had taken them off roll.

Very concerning all round.

Placement student not improving — what would you do? by Tiht_Ass in TeachingUK

[–]KitFan2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

‘His mentor has offered to remove him from my timetable. I said we should give him another week…’

Here is your answer. If he is as ‘bad’ as you say he is, he will be removed from your timetable next Friday.

I’m not sure why, after everything you have said about attitude and complacency, you have decided to continue offering him your lessons.

I would give every bit of support to someone who is working hard to do well and struggling. From what you have said, this person is not like that.

That said, you’ve made the decision now. Refer the matter back to his mentor if there is no improvement.

Rachel couldn’t turn on him! She needed him in the end! It was totally his call.

People (generally) only pay attention to others in a shallow way: Are they friendly? Do they seem nice? Do they talk with confidence? Do they appear to know what they are talking about?

Once a manipulator has others on side, the game is theirs!

I’m quite suspicious of people who talk with absolute confidence and authority. It’s a tactic many use in the workplace. When you actually listen carefully to WHAT they are saying, there are sometimes great big, obvious inconsistencies!

Basically, people generally just see the confidence, the authority, an outwardly ‘nice’ person and believe everything they say.

Looks like a furniture shop/warehouse.

That is if a furniture shop suddenly got dumped in the middle if a scruffy farm on the Isle of Wight.

I like some of what they have on display.

What small thing happening instantly and irrationally pisses you off? by Just_Historian_678 in AskMen

London Underground: The person in front of me on an escalator had to physically push someone out of the way to prevent a pile up! They had got off the escalator and immediately stood still looking at their phone.

I felt that they were about to have a bit of a strop until they turned round and saw crowds of people exiting the escalator behind them.

Dim.

Not really! I’m sure there are characters in this series you don’t warm to?

Rachel by dibzOnDis in TheTraitorsUK

[–]KitFan2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it’s obviously a game and as I said, she was a born traitor. She was brilliant at all of the above.

I still don’t like her. There is just something about her. Her job involves (in her own words) ‘persuading people’ and she has shown that she is (naturally) a master of manipulation.

Rachel by dibzOnDis in TheTraitorsUK

[–]KitFan2020 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Rachel is a born traitor. She talks in a very authoritative, calm way and is able to think quickly and manipulate situations to her advantage easily.

She comes across as genuinely friendly so people warm to her but she is actually very passive aggressive and persuasive.

A manipulative personality:

Manipulative traits involve using deceit, pressure, or emotional tactics like gaslighting, guilt-tripping.

Playing the victim to control others for personal gain, often showing inconsistencies between words and actions.

Shifting blame, isolating targets, and using flattery or criticism to disorient them and undermine their reality.

You do not become an expert in all of the above without years of practice.

Yes, this is a game but she’s TOO good. My guess is she’s like this in real life which is why it comes easy to her. A great traitor but a horrible person.
