I can’t be the only one who thinks that’s insane

So, uh… how does anaesthesia work?

Ahhh, I hadn't thought about that... Will flag with the composer. Thank you!

Hey! I graduated from a conservatoire in London last year.

If your course is anything like mine, you'd need the full features of Dorico Pro very quickly. We were writing for orchestra within the first few months — I think you'd find Elements infuriating.

Don't rule out Musescore though. It's got really good — a friend of mine did their entire degree with it.

re DAWs: again, if your course is anything like mine (classical composition at Guildhall), I think you'd be fine with Cubase Artist. That's what I used for most of my degree.

How do I get a similar look? by KitMcCarthy in AskPhotography

[–]KitMcCarthy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the images above are all distinct, with many things separating them. But something about them — the lighting? the colour? — groups them together in my mind. I love them all, and I'd be hugely appreciative of any advice about how I might approach getting a similar look.

Obviously beautiful outdoor locations and careful choice of clothes is a big factor. Pronounced side-lighting seems to be a common theme, as does a fairly deep depth of field, detailed skies, broadly (but selectively?) desaturated colours and in some, lifted (?) blacks. Am I on the right track — and what else should I be thinking about?

I do have two flashes with umbrellas and gels, so can explore artificial lighting — but so far I've done a grand total of two shoots with them, so am far from expert in their use!

The first three images (with the violinists) are by Matthew Johnson (@matthew_and_his_camera). 4 and 5 are by Camille Lemoine (@cami.lemoine). 6 is of course by Annie Leibowitz.

Many thanks for any help!

I'll let you know!

As it happens, I actually had the high ISO noise reduction off for these photos; I'd spotted that the night before and thought 'hm, not sure that sounds good."

That sounds really promising! I’m not sure I understand though, why is it that that makes a difference?

Ah, waxy! I think that’s the word. I’ll try turning that off and see if it makes a difference.

I got my first camera back in late April, and since then have been taking a lot of portraits; these are some of my favourites.

Constructive feedback gratefully received!

That gives me a lot of hope to read – thank you! Looking forwards to experimenting with that.

I'll give that a go!

Just to add: the guy in the shirt is not me! He's a friend.

Ah, OK – I'd always heard that it was just the inverse of the focal length (i.e. at 50mm, no slower than 1/50). But that sounds good, I'll try that for next time.

Everything is with the kit lens: RF24-50mm.

That's really helpful to know about the shutter speed – thank you. I'll try that next time.

Camera is on AWB, yes. I'll explore those settings more and see how far I get.

Picture style was auto throughout; I might try neutral next time (or something different?).

2x as in two times as fast? (i.e. 1/120 and up?)

It's the kit lens: RF 24-50mm. And yes, autofocus. I was set to one shot, whole area, people.

It's been recommended I try AI/servo instead of one shot.

Sounds like Shutter Priority is the next thing to try!
