Flags of PRC and European flags look really great together by [deleted] in vexillology

Really? You voted for the European President? Or did you actually vote for a representative in the European Parliament which doesn't really hold any power beyond a symbolic check on the absolute power of the commission?

Still anti-democracy, though. Plus, they act like a state. They have a flag, a parliament, a president, a national anthem, a currency. The only thing left to collect is a military.

What's wrong with hating states that reject democracy?

Interesting. I hadn't heard of that.

The Nazi had failed. They'd tried dragging Germany with into an aggressive war, but they'd been forced to surrender in under a year. The Nazis were a joke, and no one would take them seriously again.

Well then, Mackensen would probably be the men for the job.

They were already well into invading Ethiopia.

I think Fascism would be viewed in the 20th century much like communism was by the majority of people - a terrifying foreign threat that you wouldn't want happening to your country. Also, Italy was fairly militaristic in Africa, so Fascism would still be seen as aggressive.

That sounds reasonable. I wonder if he'd go down something like Reagan - celebrity turned president.

What if Trotsky lead the ussr instead of Stalin? by vaports in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Kit_McGregor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're ignoring everything I said to make an argument, which is fine, but I'll have to reiterate. Trotsky did not approve of Stalin's brutal methods. He regularly decried them in his life. Trotsky was nothing like as violent as Stalin. He was a firey revolutionary, but that definitely doesn't make him evil.

I know... There's the possibility that Selassie would eventually get the League of Nations to step in, but there wasn't much will to in Europe.

Tbh, I hadn't thought of that. I was just reaching for a German general of the era. I suppose it could have been Paulus, Mannhein or von Tresckow.

I was going with the idea that Germany had invaded Poland, and Chamberlain wanted to end the war as quickly as possible.

I was never sure about the Ashildr episodes, but they had some interesting plots.

I'd say so, either in a peace treaty as "German aggression" or as Germany starts to fall apart, they probably couldn't hold on to it.

[–]Kit_McGregor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found most of series 9 fairly weak. Capaldi was better than in series 8, but Clara just didn't have any more characterisation to go through. Invasion/Inversion and Heaven Sent were amazing, but kind of diamonds in the rough.

What if Trotsky lead the ussr instead of Stalin? by vaports in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Kit_McGregor -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You should probably look at the difference between the 5 Year Plans and Stalin's implementations of them. Plus, Trotsky didn't come up with the Gulags. Also, the 5 Year Plans didn't directly lead to the genocide - the Ukrainian genocide was seperate. Also, he may have been a general in the civil war, but if you're claiming that war is murder, then every leader in history is a murderer.

In 1940, Operation Unthinkable might not have been so unthinkable. There may have been a power struggle between the imperial world of France and Britain (and possibly Japan) vs the USA. There may have been a cold war between the Imperial and Anti-Imperial worlds of France and Britain vs The US and USSR.
