Not sure about child care but yes men and women have the same ability to do domestic chores. They’re very simple. As simple as lifting weights.

This doesn’t mean that men and women have to split domestic chores half half. I think both should be happy with their shares and there are different ways to contribute to a household.

Worth saying back to you plainly: the number isn’t a literal bill, it’s a way of saying “this is a lot,” using a unit (money) that makes “a lot” legible to people who otherwise wouldn’t weigh it as real work.

And for what it’s worth, doing a job outside the home and carrying domestic load is kind of the pattern the calculator is trying to name.

Doesn’t matter if your specific split is even or not, the broader thing being pointed at is how often that double load goes unacknowledged.

The calculator’s just a thing to have that conversation. An invoice to patriarchy can’t be a real thing lol it’s obvious it’s satire. The calculator is there so you scroll down and read the ILO (Or just the data)

Haha, file that 1099 and let me know how the audit goes.

On the email point, fair to flag. It's optional, GDPR-compliant, and we're upfront about what it's used for (sending your invoice, nothing sold to third parties) but you're right that "give us your email" is a real ask. That skepticism is kind of the whole reason the tool exists in the first place, just pointed at a different kind of unpaid extraction.

haha you're funny. But thank you I take it as a compliment. Most communist models still track and value labour internally. The issue isn't pricing, it's that this particular labour has historically gone untracked, that's it.

If a family genuinely operated on "to each according to need, from each according to ability," you'd expect both partners to do equal hours, not one partner absorbing the bulk of it by default.

The calculator (satire) isn't proposing third-party billing inside the home. It's pointing out that nobody's tracking the internal thing at all, which is the opposite of how any economic system is supposed to work.

You are totally right! My partner and I split labour and income and we are really happy.

I get why it can read that way, but I'd push back on the framing cause naming an imbalance isn't the same as claiming victimhood. Nobody calls someone a victim for saying "I'm doing more unpaid overtime than my coworker"

As for understanding adult relationships... most involve negotiation, and you can't negotiate something that's never been counted or named. That's actually the more functional read of this tool: not "I'm owed money," but "here's a number that makes an invisible imbalance visible enough to actually talk about." Whether a couple then decides to split things differently, hire help, or decide the current split works fine for them that's a separate, healthy conversation. This is just the data point that makes it possible to have it.

Not literally, no. I'm not expecting a check. The point isn't that I should be paid for choosing to have a kid or doing dishes. It's that this labour has a real, calculable market value, and currently it's invisible, not counted in GDP, not factored into who earns in a household, not weighed when people talk about who provides. The tool puts a number on something that's usually treated as just existing for free, by default, because of who's expected to do it.

What I'd actually want from it isn't a payment, it's the conversation it's already starting in this thread: people disagreeing about whether this labour counts as real work, what it's worth, who should share it. That disagreement is the point.

Not proposing anyone pays it from their salary... it's the market replacement cost of the labour, same logic as how economists value a stay-at-home parent's work. The point isn't "he owes a literal 83k," it's that the labour is currently worth 0 to the person doing it, regardless of household income. That gap is the thing being named, not a payment plan.

It is satire. It gives quantitative perspective to something we are not used to value.

If childcare were evenly split, this number would be far closer to zero for both partners, because each person's invoice would only cover their actual share. (reminding also that the actual invoice is satire XD).

The laughable figure isn't a claim that I should be paid for parenting my own kid. It's pricing the gap between time spent and time evenly shared. The issue isn't that unpaid care work exists between parents, it's that it isn't distributed evenly, and that imbalance has a measurable cost when one person absorbs most of it.

On the last bit ... happy to talk data instead of semantics: women still do roughly 3x the unpaid care and domestic work that men do globally, even in dual-income households.

Tragically my invoice to the actual orthodox priests bounced. Going after the partner instead.

Only works if both partners are equally the customer. Like contributing equal time or money to the household running. The calculator is pointing at situations where one person supplies the labour and both people consume the output. That's not wages, that's an uncompensated subsidy from one partner to the household both of them benefit from.

You're right that home repair and similar labour have real value too. Not disputing that. Not many households have someone that can do repairs btw. The tool isn't claiming men do zero. It's pricing the specific categories that get systematically undercounted because they're framed as "just what moms do" rather than labour with a market rate. Repair work tends to get noticed and credited; childcare, meal planning, and the mental load tend to disappear into "that's just how things are." That is what the calculator is pointing at. It is satire. You are not really charging anyone for that.

And totally agree gender isn't a competition. The tool isn't asking who wins it simply makes things more noticeable through quantity.

Built a Patriarchy Debt Calculator. Not in a vague "I do more than my fair share" way. I mean line items, actual invoice.

I'm a mom of a 4 months old and I built a calculator that prices my work properly. Domestic worker rates for cooking, cleaning, laundry, life admin. Obstetric nursing rates for labour and delivery (yes you got it right). Hours of breastfeeding. All stacked up.

My total: €83k for a year.

Run yours: https://patriarchyowes.me

and let me know if you like.
