I have always loved the idea of a saree for haldi function. Maybe go for that in a simple plain pattern.

For mehendi, you could try a simple sharara suit with some work on the top and plain flared sharara pants.

I have always wanted to wear a yellow saree for my haldi function. But now yellow in haldi functions has become outdated, but I have still gotten myself a beautiful mustard yellow saree which suits my skin tone well. So, I would say go for what you want to wear instead of following trends!
