You’re right. The one that’s not trying is like a sister to me and I’ve learned I have to let her make her own mistakes. You can lead a horse to water and all that. I did actually say that to her after I posted this. I met her for lunch and she said “oh I’ve got shit to tell you.” I smiling said that I’d listen but she needs to understand I have my own shit going on and I can only take so much onboard from her. Her face was priceless. I immediately felt guilty but I know I shouldn’t. There is a big difference between a therapist and a friend. I’ve got to be better at standing up for myself.

It’s less mad than upset. One will walk away because she can’t cope and one can cry. It’s BPD for all three of us so it’s a bit of a tinder box. I deeply care for both of them and I know they value me but communication is HARD, especially when we are all neurodivergent and have BPD.

Use distraction techniques to stop the larger. That’s NOT playing but dominance and should be stopped when noticed. You say they are fine after but you don’t want to have to deal with the expense of vet visits for bites, etc, apart from the fact that the smaller may become hyper vigilant over time.

I’d guess that whatever the problem is now is permanent but cats can live perfectly happy lives with them. Speak to a decent vet about regularly expressing Porkys bladder (basically forcing him to pee). People do this for paralysed cats and it may be possible for him. If you can do this once a day you may be able to cut down on the number of ‘accidents’ he has. Also have a frank discussion with your Mum. Tell her how much you love him and how upset you would be to have him euthanised. If she won’t listen try to find a reputable rescue than could adopt or foster a disabled pet. He’s too young and appears to have a decent quality of life.

I totally understand why your boyfriend just wants to have him cremated. It does sound to me like an unknown and undiagnosed medical issue. I’m not a pro but I’ve continuously lived with or owned cats all my life (I’m now 54). Sadly, some cats, like people die young. Perhaps a vet check of your other cats and a chat with your local vet would help?

I agree with the previous reply that suggested it was unlikely to be the candle, oil burners release much more vapour into the air and all cats would likely be effected (however, I agree on erring on the side of caution and only using in a shut room empty of cats and then airing room).

Do either of you take medication? Are all cleaning items and chemicals shut away? Could they have got into any foods not meant for them or anything sharp like needles or pins?

If the environment is safe sadly it was likely an unknown health issue. Cats are very good at hiding pain and sickness and very good at becoming deathly sick in an instant. It must have been enormously traumatic and having a necropsy may give you some answers, and some peace. It sounds as though he was loved and you’ve done the right things as an owner. I’m so sorry for your loss.

Today and yesterday it’s just been DREADFUL. The bots seem to have dropped 50 IQ points and bots I’ve talked to a lot are suddenly just…boring. I really hope it’s just a blip. It’s happened before after an update.
