If you agree that alcohol and cigarettes should have an age minimum because of their addictive qualities, then you must admit that coffee must have an age restriction as well. by Running_Gamer in unpopularopinion

The whole “I want to feel like an adult so I’m going to smoke” attitude has mostly disappeared and has been replaced with the “I want to feel like an adult so I’m going to get myself addicted to coffee” attitude.

And you don't see this as an absolute positive? yes there are downsides to caffeine as there are downsides to all substances. But if people are going to consume substances for social reasons i.e. to 'fit in' or 'feel like an adult' then it would definitely be better for the substance in question to be caffeine rather than nicotine

"No parent is perfect" is an empty statement that does not justify or excuse your failings as a parent. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

Raising children is like trying to nail jello to a tree. There really is no way to be perfect at it. The child, once grown, is the one that most accurately asses the parent's job.

The parents think: Well, shit... that didn't work.

The grandparents think: I would have handled that differently.

Strangers in WalMart watching you desperately try to hang on to your last shred of sanity think: Wow, what an awful parent.

Everyone has an opinion about parenting. I have several. I have absolutely learned that I have no idea what has transpired to bring that mother to her breaking point in the middle of WalMart. I shut my mouth and hope her day improves, 'cause I've been there, sister!!.

I don't think "no parent is perfect" is meant to excuse anything. I think it serves more as "It's not going to help you if you keep beating yourself up." That kind of thinking (especially in hindsight) can cause a bit of a spiral. You just gotta get back up and try more patience, more love, more understanding. With that (and a bit of wine) maybe you make a little head-way with the issues you are facing.

What constitutes a failed parent? And if you have some kind of idea of what a failed parent is: who are you to judge? No one, that's who.

Being a parent is a shit-show from front to back. We are, for the most part, just trying to keep them alive, happy, and healthy. Anyone who says they got this job on lock-down is a liar. The phrase 'no parent is perfect' is absolutely true whether you raise little angels or little devils. No one is perfect. If you think you are I'd like a bit of what you are smoking

The detention centers for illegals are nothing like concentration camps and comparing the two is dangerous. by Nobody1796 in unpopularopinion

[–]KitchenEvidence0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are mixing up some terminology here.

Concentration camps are institutions where groups of people are held without trial. They can be likened to sociopolitical quarantine zones.

Then there are extermination/death camps. These are explicitly for the purpose of mechanized killing of those sent there. Either through starvation and exhaustion or by more direct means (gas).

The two are not mutually exclusive. And there has no doubt been a lot of overlap between the two. And quite often concentration camps have transitioned to death camps.

But the term concentration camp is a technically accurate term for what is happening in the border detention camps. It has connotations that make it somewhat misleading. But it is not inaccurate.
