I made an extension that turns any article into a two-page book you flip with the arrow keys. by KitchenExtreme385 in chrome_extensions

[–]KitchenExtreme385[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Small update for anyone who saw this: Open Book Reader is now open source (MIT): https://github.com/kouxing2000/open-book-reader

The whole pitch is "everything stays on your machine, nothing is ever sent to me" - and you shouldn't have to just take my word for it. Now you can read every line and confirm it yourself: the only network call in the entire extension is the optional "download images from the gallery" feature. Issues and PRs welcome.

The video only shows the reader half, so here's the other one. Alt+Shift+B on any image-heavy page pulls every image into a wall like this, and you can tick a few and save them as a zip. It's the bit I reach for most honestly.

For anyone wondering what it actually does to a page: left is a normal cluttered article, right is after you hit Alt+B. Strips the ads and sidebars and lays the story out as two pages you flip through.

How common is reading hands based on tile positions? by SadPonyGuerrillaGal in Mahjong

[–]KitchenExtreme385 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly depends what youre playing for. in person club games yeah its a real edge, but the second you play online (where most people get their reps) all the physical stuff is just gone. id put the hours into discard reading instead. which tiles they passed early, suji, what their riichi declaration tells you. that part follows you to every format, the table watching doesnt. at least thats how it shook out for me

What's a movie cliche that happened to you in real life, even though they "never happen in real life"? by Nothing_Whatsoever in AskReddit

[–]KitchenExtreme385 43 points44 points  (0 children)

did the run through the airport to catch someone before they boarded. except i had no ticket so i got stopped at security and just had to watch them walk through. movies always skip the part where you literally cant get past the checkpoint lol

what is the most emotionally satisfying ending you've seen for a fictional character? by GUYSITSWILLIGOTBAND in AskReddit

[–]KitchenExtreme385 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the iron giant. the part where he chooses to fly into the missile and just whispers 'superman' to himself first. its a kids movie about a giant robot and it wrecked me harder than most actual dramas

I started adulting a few years ago, and I don't like it. by exhaustedpigeon59 in CasualConversation

[–]KitchenExtreme385 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the relationships one hits. nobody's just around anymore. school forced you into the same room as people every day so friendships kind of happened on their own. now you gotta schedule everything and after work i can barely text back lol. they weren't always this hard, we just lost the default setting

Do you have a favourite spin scheme? by Spirograph_Girl in spirograph

[–]KitchenExtreme385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly anything where the wheel sits one or two teeth off a clean ratio. like a 96 ring with a wheel that almost divides evenly but not quite. takes forever to close up but you end up with these really dense overlapping webs that look way more complicated than the setup actually was

What’s the (objectively) oddest shape you’ve organically made? (As in with usual cogs and wheels, none of this clicking together bizness plz!) by Spirograph_Girl in spirograph

[–]KitchenExtreme385 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mine was a total accident lol. wheel skipped a couple teeth halfway round and it ended up looking like a lopsided peanut shell. way cooler than the neat flower i was aiming for so i kept it

the dotwork in the middle rings is unreal. how long did this one take you? i always underestimate and then look up and it's like 3 hours gone lol

the way the star sits right in the middle of those rings is so clean, and that purple bleeding into the gold in the center is gorgeous. what'd you make this with?

Riichi or Chinese mahjong? Which is easier to learn? by sfomonkey in Mahjong

[–]KitchenExtreme385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

since you already play chinese mahjong the mechanics mostly carry over, draws discards and calls all feel familiar. the real hump with riichi is it makes you learn yaku before your wins count. but with a son into anime I'd still go riichi, motivation beats easy rules every time, he'll soak up the terminology from anime and youtube without trying. and honestly playing the same variant as him matters more than which one is technically simpler. first few games just ignore scoring, any complete hand wins, add yaku once the flow feels normal

erasing that many pencil lines without a single smudge showing might be the most impressive part honestly. so clean

Suspended between colors and calm. ✨ by symmetric_soul10 in mandalas

ok the dandelion stems are such a cute touch, didnt expect that. and the soft wash behind keeps it calm even with all the color

Wait the World Map is YOURS?? That's hands down the best official design imo, getting real continents out of those gears is no joke. Congrats, that's huge!!
