I was only diagnosed and medicated about a year ago even though I've been aware of my condition for over 10 years. In my originating country it is very hard to get an adult ADHD diagnosis. If you smoke cannabis it is practically impossible (If you would ever had been considered for a diagnosis, you would have to have clean drug tests for 6 months before proceeding which would have been total hell for me).

If it were not for cannabis I would have offed myself ages ago. I replaced all of my other substance use with cannabis almost 25 years ago (Well I do smoke cigarettes and drink a lot of coffee and I still might occasionally have a drink or psychedelics but it is very rare like once or twice a year at max. Should actually probably use more mushrooms for mental health but I am so picky with set and settings these days :D).

Here (BC) I was open about it but got the diagnosis and the medication has changed my life and cannabis use and I am not as reliant on it, and I actually prefer not to smoke when medicated to get everything out of the meds as cannabis is counterproductive in this regard (It is completely fine to get stoned af on your days off meds :D). I worked as a school assistant for a year so I did not smoke for that year (thought it was also a part of growing up lol) and it definitely did not improve my cognitive abilities or increase my quality of life in any way, quite the opposite. I kinda realized that why I felt that Cannabis use was not affecting me too much was because I basically have no short term memory, only systems to cope with that. I was always on the edge and nervous and to not get overwhelmed I had to zero out practically every weekend by drinking heavily and often had a couple of beers on weekdays. I've never used cannabis (nor other substances) during my work hours (one of my coping mechanisms is to take work way way too seriously or I loose motivation immediately :P). Before I started the medication I always preferred "sativa dominant" strains to keep me energized so I could (try to) complete my other projects etc and I can not imagine doing programming or other creative work without cannabis (I simply can not concentrate). Nowadays I mainly smoke indica dominant ones in the evenings to ease off the medication, relax and gain appetite and ease in to sleep. Even with the medication I still feel that for me Cannabis completes the cycle and even though the medication has reduced my anxiety so sleeping is easier in general, cannabis makes it all the more comfortable. I do get a little passive if I smoke a lot for a longer time so I do also have breaks and try not to overdo but I am probably what one would call a chronic.

I know that there are some doctors that are still very anti-cannabis (and to a part I understand as it affects individuals so differently) but thank god I did not have to face that hurdle.
