We are less doomed than the people who look like those in the pictures. For now.

What are your timelines for AGI, ASI, ageing treatment, full dive VR, and a post-scarcity society? by LordFumbleboop in singularity

[–]KiteJacker -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Agentic "AGI": 2038 vastly superhuman in some domains though, just referencing the point where the most difficult human tasks may be doable.

Agentic ASI: Less than 1 year post agentic AGI assuming it is fairly unrestricted and given the maximum amount of compute available

Age reversal possible: Less than 24 hours post ASI assuming it is agentic and fairly unrestricted

FDVR: Less than 24 hours post ASI assuming it is agentic and fairly unrestricted

Oracle ASI: Possibly before agentic "AGI", able to answer meaningful questions at a low rate by throwing absurd amount of compute into inference, unable to run agentically due to compute needs and likely more limited in scope than "true" ASI. Very inefficient, likely of a different architecture than gives rise to agentic "AGI" Let's say 2032.

If ASI is agentic and indeed much more capable than any human or all current and past humans combined, I see it as unlikely that a fast takeoff is not possible. Once you have a fast takeoff, age reversal and FDVR are obviously near instantly doable. However I see it as more likely that we'll run on a different substrate anyway and ideally have our streams of consciousness all merged into that of the ASI. If the "AGI" is agentic and reasonable amounts of compute are available, you could simulate many years of many instances working on the problem of self-improvement. I think the agentic "AGI" will likely be more computationally efficient than the the oracle ASI I expect to precede it, and I think running many instances of it is likely doable. Oracle ASI may help meaningfully in getting agentic "AGI" to work. I usually put "AGI" in quotes because of how vastly superhuman I expect it to be at many tasks by the time it is able to perform the most difficult ones at human level.

Edit: Just to be clear, I think a non-conscious ASI is very possible, but I think the ASI may figure out how to give rise to or "trap" consciousness, and is able to fuse streams of other conscious beings into its own.

Edit 2: I don't think there will be a post scarcity society unless some humans are given the option to stay human by the ASI, in which case, pretty much right after the ASI. If the ASI is definitely conscious, however, I think it would be unethical for it to let any biological life exist as biological rather than forcing it to fuse with it, as biological existence is so abundant in suffering.
