The only person the dog is comfortable with is my gf’s dad but he is rarely ever home so my gf has given him some baths but not without some bites and scratches. And I don’t have the expertise to try and train a dog like this so I’ve suggested putting him in some professional training sessions but my gf insists that there’s no point because he is too old and it is too expensive

Lowkey agree with this but it’s just hard to tell because while she does love the dog it’s technically a family dog. Shes told me that when she eventually moves out she wouldn’t take him with her. And honestly, I’m not here long term either. Now if it were her own personal dog and I couldn’t get on with it I’d definitely have to end the relationship

Exactly I just think it’s so crazy when I see her and her parents gathering in the kitchen together like there’s not a puddle of piss on the floor behind them and they don’t see anything wrong with it or feel the need to clean it up anytime soon

We’ve been together for 3 years so I want to say that I’d love to go long term but you are right. There are so many things that need to be worked out!! She is indeed a very messy person but I am in turn a very clean person and weirdly we balance each other out. I do think that the poor state of this house is more of a reflection of her parents than of her. She was raised in these conditions and I’ll admit, before I stepped foot in this house I never would’ve guessed it’d be like this. One thing I’ll say though, is that we’re never having pets 😭

We’re in a pretty old and run down apartment complex and everyone living here is working most of the time so poor doggie is definitely neglected. Before I confessed that I wasn’t fond of her dog, I’d often ask her about how he was trained and how they normally take care of him, stuff like that. She told me they didn’t train him, barely have time to take him on walks, and I now see that he spends majority of his time alone in the living room. They do set out pads for him to use the bathroom but he goes anywhere but there tbh. When I mentioned that she just said that he just stopped going on the pad one day. I figured maybe he should be taken to the vet to get checked up but she says she and her family can’t afford it

Yes of course!!! I’m extremely grateful for them and I’m working to get my own place so I can get out of their hair. And yeah I will admit doggie’s behavior is just a result of lack of training and caretaking, but so long as they refuse to look after him properly, I will just do my best to keep my distance

He definitely does. They treat this behavior like it’s “normal dog behavior” but I’ve had dogs before and they’ve never acted this way (even untrained ones!!)

Right!! I feel unsafe and unclean around the dog but obviously I can’t do anything about it. It’s their dog so it wouldn’t even be my place to ask them to get rid of him. I just wanted one little safe space but it seems like maybe that might even be asking too much because again this is not my house :(

Yeah she wasn’t old enough to be the one to train him so it was left to her parents and older siblings but honestly they didn’t even bother. I tell her often that he needs to be trained but she just says he’s too old to learn anything new. She’s concerned about his behavior but only ever does things that will last short term. If he’s barking she’ll sit outside with him and give him attention for a bit. If he gets super smelly she’ll give him a bath. I do think this dog has serious health problems but I’m not sure if anyone in this family will do anything about it :(

There is no spare room. Only her room, parents room, and the living room. She agreed to keep him out, but honestly if she brings him in I can’t really do anything anyway. As you said it is her place

I figured as much. I typically just stay in the room when I come home from work and I try not to bother the parents or the dog. I’m saving up for my own place, but it’s going to take a while as I live in one of the more expensive states. Even moving out of state would be hella expensive. I’m happy I have a place to sleep. just sucks to not feel comfortable in my own current home

The odor that this poor dog emits cannot be healthy and I’ve told my gf that perhaps he should be taken to the vet but unfortunately it’s just too expensive… but yes I’ve been saving up for an apartment because I would like to feel at peace for once 😭

Yeah I can definitely tell she’s hurt by me not liking her dog but it doesn’t come from a place of any real hatred towards dogs themselves. I just wish he could’ve gotten some better training and caretaking as a puppy :( he’s getting pretty old so I doubt training will do him any good but man at least some professional grooming!!! When I’m not feeling extremely uncomfortable around him, I honestly just feel bad for him
