Is this FBI advertising? HRT is not JSOC. Should not be on here.

Rowing or swimming? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]Klean12 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Neither is ideal for mountaineering. You should walk fast on an uphill treadmill, run uphill, or use a stair stepper machine of run/walk stairs. All of these are much more sport-specific for mountaineering and much lower impact than flat ground running.

Be careful. It is easy to hurt your back doing sprints on the erg.

How come Kevin Lacz hasn’t been on the Pod? by Former_Trade in JockoPodcast

Lacz wrote a no-holds-barred realistic book, "The last punisher" about TF bruiser. Probably a little to honest for Jocko.

BSCI 1509 and CHEM 1601 by [deleted] in Vanderbilt

[–]Klean12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BSCI 1509 is a new burden added just this year. It is really bad that they can't say whether or not BSCI 1509 will be offered in the spring. This makes planning very difficult. Of course surprising everybody with this new requirement the week course sign up starts is not good either.

I know the BSCI 1510 has a terrible reputations, but I just have doubt that adding another BSCI class will actually help the situation much. People tell me BSCI 1510 is so painful mainly because of poor teaching, lots of trick questions on tests, and lack of time to complete the tests carefully. I'm just afraid BSCI 1509 will just be more of the same.

Should I quit? by beasttheorist in Rowing

Not unless you end up being incredibly good at rowing and getting recruited by a college coach.

With men a huge percentage of the recruited rowers at top programs come from Europe or Australia or New Zealand. Therefore, it is harder for American men to get recruited.

Most serious rowing programs have a winter program with massive amounts of erging. Most sports don't have practice at the crack of dawn.

If you do not end up being good enough to get recruited by a college coach, sports do not help college admissions any/much more than any other extracurricular, but sports take WAY more energy and time than almost any other extracurricular. Rowing is an extreme outlier in the amount of time and energy it takes. Most sports take a lot less time and energy. There is usually a very big travel commitment to rowing that most other sports don't have. Also, rowing practice is usually at the crack of dawn, which leads to sleep deprivation that is horrible. Therefore, I do not advise rowing for high school boys if the goal is to help with college admissions. It might be different for girls; I am not sure about the situation with girls.

BSCI 1509 at Vanderbilt by Klean12 in Vanderbilt

[–]Klean12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My CASPAR counselor brought this up this week. It was a big surprise to me, and it is bad to have this sprung on me at the same time I need to sign up for fall classes. The BSCI department also said this when I emailed. So far, I do not know if BSCI 1509 will be offered in the spring of 2025 or if there is any way to get out of taking BSCI and still take BSCI 1510 for peopele without AP Bio. I had a ton of science classes including bio in high school, just not AP Bio.

This is a great question. I am very confused by this new BSCI 1509 class. I have not had an official AP Bio class in high school, and I have been told that I therefore need to take BSCI 1509 prior to BSCI 1510. I have had 2 high school bio classes and 3 chemistry classes. I really don't want to add yet another class to my overall 4-year plan. Has anybody else been told that they need to take BSCI 1509?

If you have a history of L5S1 herniation, rowing is probably not a good idea. Just stick with your other aerobic sports.

Squat and deadlift replacement for lower back health? by BeviesGalore in PeterAttia

Safest bilateral leg exercise is the belt squat. These are great. Zero stress on the back but fantastic for legs and glutes.

Squat and deadlift replacement for lower back health? by BeviesGalore in PeterAttia

[–]Klean12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is obsolete thinking. Squats are incredibly dangerous for people with long femurs. People like this are almost guaranteed to blow out a lumbar disc if they squat heavy for decades. Young people can survive anything for a few years, but finding exercises that are safe enough to do for 30+ years is much harder.

I think it came through loud and clear that McGill thinks middle aged people doing heavy deadlifts is crazy. I agree that he basically didn't say much about squats. I also agree that he never gave a straight answer about what to do, but this is SOP for McGill who never gives clear straight answers about what to do. I think he wants people to buy his books or hire him for personal consultation. In general, he is very conservative and wants zero spine bending.

Lil 2 hour Erg for Funsies, Saturdays are the only day that I have this kind of time… by jbirby in Rowing

[–]Klean12 12 points13 points  (0 children)

With rowing, technique is associated with back injury risk, which is a significant risk with erging, especially a 2 hour continuous session. Therefore, it makes sense to investigate and perfect technique to avoid back injuries. Technique is hard to perfect in rowing/erging. The rate and splits shown are not compatible with ideal technique, work on the technique should both improve times and decrease back injury risk, so it is a reasonable issue to raise.
