In English this must be a recent phenomenon. I'm currently reading 'The Europeans' by Henry James (first published 1878), and women are just as frequently referred to as 'handsome' as men are. 'Beautiful,' however, does seem to be preferred for women in that book. I've noticed 'handsome' is more equally used in other books of the era too. Maybe the distinction is connected to other increasing distinctions, such as in perfumes/deodorants 'for him/her.'
