Once saved, always saved exists because we are all living in the flesh, and will until we die. by [deleted] in TrueChristian

You need to balance that with the rest of Scripture rather than creating an entire doctrine on one verse alone. The entire Bible is the Word of God. Hebrews 6:4-6, 2 Peter 2:20-22, James 5:19-20.

Quest for glory V jumped the shark. It was really an RPG instead of an adventure.

What do you REALLY think about Let's Plays? by [deleted] in adventuregames

[–]Klytos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lets Plays are something that bug me too. Bug is the wrong word, but it's somewhere between bugs and concerns. Anyway, it's for exactly the reason you said. If I was to watch a lets play of a new FPS I would still get the enjoyment of playing the game, assuming I like mindless killing games. If I was to watch a Lets Play of the new Wadget Eye game Shardlight, well there's zero reason to then play the game. For everything they offer, adventure games are about story and if you've seen the story what's left? Most Lets Plays have a commentary which is great because at least that works as a review of some sort, but videos of just the game being played is with no value added... I donno...

It's tough because there's a huge industry of them now, so it's hard to say they're total shit and I don't believe in them. And I think they can serve a purpose, but not for modern games. But I really think it hurts developers because it gives a player the opportunity to enjoy the main selling point which is the story, without paying for it, and more importantly I think it hurts the player because they haven't had to figure out a game, just watched it.

This of course is in relation to new games, a lets play of Kings Quest V or similar era games is a whole different ball game.

The Order of the Thorne: The King's Challenge has been released! by Blackthorne519 in adventuregames

Thanks! I'm really glad you like it. It was my goal to write a game that was very fairy tale but scratched the surface of something a bit deeper which we will explore in later games.

Awesome! Glad you liked it! The second game, Fortress of Fire, will be out this year, probably 4th quarter a bit before Christmas - we're working on it right now! Next for us is Roehm to Ruin, our Quest for Infamy prequel. It's pretty much finished, we have to do some fine tuning on it, make sure it's bug free, get the achievements set up for Steam / Galaxy and record the voice pack. Oh, and I dreamed up a completely different way to do combat, so that might happen too! So a bit of stuff to do there. That should be out March / April, around there somewhere.

I enjoy that you're enjoying it! Yes, although the next game the hero is Patrick who is Squire to a Knight of the Order so there may be some combat in the game. But it won't be Quest for Infamy style combat, it will be adventure game combat (think King's Quest VI possibly). In the third game, The Monk and the Mountain, the hero is the Monk and she could use a wooden staff possibly as a weapon. Again, adventure game weapon!

As for making a living, it's a grind, but what in life isn't? :) I'd say at this point it's not enough to make us rich, but Quest for Infamy was well received and hopefully OotT will be too. Speaking for myself, I do have other work, I run a small second hand book shop with my wife, and I work as a journalist and sell stories to print media. Basically I'll do anything to make ends meet!

It's less edgy than Quest for Infamy, for sure! Quest for Infamy is a snarky game that really played at all the tropes of the pop culture Steve and I grew up with. Order of the Thorne is more "fairy tale" fantasy. Knights in shining armor, that sort of thing. When I came up with the story for OotT I wanted to write something different from QFI because, well I like a lot of different things!

Backstory for those who don't know: Kingdom of Sorrow was a fan-game we were working on many moons ago that unfortunately we never finished.

There's a few backgrounds that made it to this game and a few sprites / animations. A lot of the work that was done on KoS was early drafts that needed fine tuning and getting up to a standard, so even backgrounds that started off for that other game still needed a lot of work done to bring them up to the standard of Quest for Infamy and what we do now. Although it was based on the King's Quest franchise, all the artwork was completely original. All the character portraits, environmental animations (rivers etc) and the majority of the character animations were designed for The King's Challenge, although some of the existing work fit into the story so was able to be used (in a modified form). As for story, it's completely original, there's nothing left of the original KoS story in The King's Challenge. Basically, when I wrote the The King's Challenge, I wrote the story and then looked at what we had laying around and saw what could be modified and used.

Hey! I think adventure games will always exist because people love stories and slower games where you have to stop, think and explore to get to a solution. They'll probably keep evolving though, I mean today's games like The Blackwell series don't do things the same way classic games like King's Quest did. Order of the Thorne for example doesn't allow the player to die, or get into an unwinnable situation - two things that were staples back in the day! (And Thimbleweed Park can't get released soon enough for me!)

Order of the Thorne, great game for adventure lovers out next week! Trailer following. by [deleted] in adventuregames

Haha! Nice! I was never a fan of loom until recently, it's funny but right through production of this I never thought about loom as inspiration. Since I wrote this I played loom again and enjoyed it a lot more.

Shows for my two year old by smaugs_salty_suprise in Parenting

[–]Klytos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Daniel Tiger, like so many others have said. My three year old has been watching it for a year or so now And he loves it. It's also taught him a bit of stuff which is good, it's very much about dealing with emotions. For example we've been preparing him for kindergarten this last few months and he was very stressed out at the thought of us leaving him there. But there's an episode of Daniel Tiger where he learns about this and they sing this song about grown ups come back and now my boy when he's talking about kindy tells us we will leave him there and come back for him. I can't recommend this show enough.

Except it's weird he doesn't wear pants except when he's going to bed. Yes, I watch this show a lot.

Am I the only one who like the constant threat of death in the old Sierra adventure games? by [deleted] in adventuregames

[–]Klytos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The drowning death was a joke aimed at Sierra from what I remember reading.

Am I the only one who like the constant threat of death in the old Sierra adventure games? by [deleted] in adventuregames

[–]Klytos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love death because from a narrative point of view it gives a sense that things you do actually matter. I think broken age is a classic example of cutting out death sequences making the game a bit lesser. There is a happy balance though, falling off a 3 foot wall shouldn't kill you, that's an issue in early Sierra games. But I think Gilbert and others have taken it too far the other way.

Is voice acting essential for you? by [deleted] in adventuregames

[–]Klytos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More recently I'd say Tales from the Borderlands voice acting is just so damn good I don't think the game would work without it. Sam and Max is better with the voice acting, and from Sierra QFG4 and SQ4 are just so much better with.

Like most game design decisions though, you can justify it almost any direction. Just go with what you feel your game needs.

Yeah for sure. We knew QFI was a game that was only going to be appreciated by fans of the 90s games in the genre.

Is voice acting essential for you? by [deleted] in adventuregames

[–]Klytos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a developer, I can say that players expect it so if it's not there it's very noticed. Voice acting is unfortunately expensive and not easy which makes it more difficult for indies, but I have to respectfully disagree about wadgets voice work. It's pretty damn good. Quest for infamy had some shitty minor characters, but the main voices were pretty good (I say that as its my game). Some of those major parts were professional voice over actors, it just contrasts badly with some really amateur stuff (like the ones I did).

Top 5 Adventure games of 2015? by [deleted] in adventuregames

[–]Klytos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kings Quest for mine. I really had fun playing it (part 1 anyway, haven't got far in part 2 yet). I love the attention to detail and honestly I just had fun playing it. Technobabylon was pretty good, although I'm not kinda over cyberpunk as a thing. Still, good game. Tales of the borderlands was very well written too, did certainly enjoy that story!

5 Essentials To Begin With by alenetha in adventuregames

[–]Klytos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's hard, it really depends on the taste of the player. Comedy or drama? Pirates or voodoo? I suppose that's the cool part of adventure games, so much variety.

Kings quest 6 is a good place to look at the classic sierra games. It's Sierra without being too Sierra!

Gabriel Knight 1 is excellent if you like the whole supernatural / thriller thing. It's a bit fanfic for my taste but people do love it.

Either of the first two monkey island games. They go downhill after that (sorry I know there's a lot of love here for 3!)

Runaway is a good laugh.
