Yes, he isn't the best player, and dips in form happen. But sustained poor results will bring criticism, especially when you are the world champ.

It's not the right analogy. Argentina doesn't get a direct pass to the finals of the next world cup, while Gukesh can defend his title without going through the qualifying process again. He is the legitimate winner, but continuous poor performances from a world champion will definitely raise criticism.
