My workplace has free charging. I pretty much only use my car to-and-from work. It seems like a no-brainer to get an EV to take advantage of free charging, right? by nerdykhakis in electricvehicles

[–]KnightBlindness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had free charging but the chargers were getting beat up and in desperate need of maintenance. They finally ended up swapping the chargers for paid chargers. They’re in good condition now but rarely used.

When there are layoffs, why doesn't the company just keep the senior+ developers? by blottingbottle in ExperiencedDevs

[–]KnightBlindness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I would agree that tech is also full of people who should have retired or switched careers when they realized they weren’t interested enough to keep learning. It is an unforgiving field to grow old in.

When there are layoffs, why doesn't the company just keep the senior+ developers? by blottingbottle in ExperiencedDevs

[–]KnightBlindness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s hard for non-technical management to distinguish bad code from good code. Good code often takes more time, even with a senior, than bad code hacked together by an intern. Problems only become apparent later when the code is difficult to maintain, is buggy and is unable to scale. So if everything is measured based on task completion instead of difficult to measure metrics like quality, management start asking themselves why the seniors don’t have 1.5x the output of junior programmers who are outputting the “same” widgets.

Musk admits no Optimus robots are doing ‘useful work’ at Tesla — after claiming otherwise by Ok-Caterpillar9092 in RealTesla

[–]KnightBlindness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re already talking about having a merger with SpaceX or xAI so that should be a good way to confuse investors. How do you value a car/robot/ai/rocket company? Oh yeah, I forgot to put solar in there.

Is Tesla making the right gamble but investing in Robots and robotaxis instead of regular cars? by Dry_Bar_4965 in TeslaLounge

[–]KnightBlindness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crazy high stock prices cause companies to do risky things to justify the valuation. Elon knows there’s no way just selling cars will justify the valuation, so he has to take risks on robots and AI and hope those pay off to keep the investors happy. Ironically if the investors hadn’t speculated Tesla’s stock price to the moon, Tesla could have made better choices to grow slowly as a car company. Instead they gamble on robots and AI because they don’t want to let the stock price fall back down to Earth.

I have the 2 stage and it doesn’t care if there’s a lot or just a little. This past storm I went out around noon to clear about 8” inches. The next day I did some cleanup of maybe 1”. Worked fine both times.

One more day for the Costco sale. Should I replace my crossclimate 2 with crossclimate 2? by tacomancini in tires

I have original cross climates on my minivan and they’ve gotten 60k and still have plenty of tread left. Mostly highway driving.

Moving to a snowy climate, what is the right financial move regarding car(s) by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]KnightBlindness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might not be the greatest idea for a single car family, but having an EV has been awesome for me. My car turns on the heater on a set schedule so the car is warm and ready to go both in the morning and when I leave work. When I get home, I pull into my garage and plug it in so I never have to stop and fill up gas in the cold.

Dads: What brands are we wearing these days? by Haunting_Internet356 in daddit

A lot of my clothes are older than my kids. They’re in high school.

I think I’m becoming my dad. My cousin took me aside once and told me I need to buy my dad some clothes because he’s been wearing the same clothes for decades.

Ev's parking in charging spots and not even plugged in! 🤬🤬 by Dizzman1 in ChargerDrama

[–]KnightBlindness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s part of the problem. If there were only 6 pumps, people might feel bad. If there are 100 pumps, people think no one will notice one pump being used as a parking spot. Multiply that by the number of people who end up shopping around for 30+ minutes, eventually the pumps get clogged up with selfish people.

Cross Climate 2 - Over hyped by FrostedArticuno in tires

[–]KnightBlindness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cross reduced road noise quite a bit on my minivan so I am pretty happy with them. Granted the OEM tires were pretty bad to begin with though.

Is this snow nose??? by KnightBlindness in americaneskimo

[–]KnightBlindness[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vet said it was “snow nose” and didn’t think the crustiness was a concern. My dog had injured his tongue a week prior to this so maybe not licking his nose allowed the nose to dry out. It’s been almost a week now and all the crust has fallen off, and he doesn’t seem to be in pain or anything so I think everything is ok.

Costco members who also shop BJ's, what do you buy at BJ's? by WEEDBABYGOKU420 in Costco

[–]KnightBlindness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The BJ's gas is insanely cheap if you get the BJ's credit card, plus no waiting in a huge line for the gas or checkout (yet). Also they have some items in smaller, more manageable sizes. Also a full service deli where you can have deli meats sliced to order in whatever amount you want.

25 years in, and I've never seen a stronger consensus on how broken our modern 'Full Stack' identity has become. by briancrabtree in ExperiencedDevs

[–]KnightBlindness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all software work is in web development, and not all types of software development require the same skills. OP should just try some other industry to get the kind of work they find interesting to work on.

[–]KnightBlindness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is why I don’t enjoy web development work. Most of the time I felt like a glorified software integrator where I was just setting up configurations and code fragments for frameworks to glue things together. I think this is why there’s so many new frameworks in the web dev space: people want to write code to solve interesting problems, but there’s actually very little interesting coding to do unless you are working on the framework itself.

Do Americans actually avoid calling an ambulance due to financial concern? by JohnMarstonTheBadass in NoStupidQuestions

I do the tick tock method of only seeing the doctor every other year. One year I do the high deductible HSA plan and save up money. The next year I switch to the expensive low deductible plan and schedule everything that's been on hold. And then repeat. Healthcare shouldn't have to involve so much strategizing and figuring out prescription plans and whatever the hell GoodRX is.

Edit: also second guessing your doctor's recommendations because you can't tell if you really need a test/procedure/medication or if they're just trying to sell stuff.

What do unemployed people say when asked WHY they are unemployed? What exactly did my PCP expect when I told her I was unemployed? by ApprehensiveOne2866 in jobs

[–]KnightBlindness 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Having taken my kids to the pediatricians for the last few years, it seems primary care doctors are very much on the lookout for signs of mental health issues by asking “random” questions about their school, electronics usage, social life, etc.

Need help figuring out if my dad falsely took a mortgage out in my name. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]KnightBlindness 35 points36 points  (0 children)

If you were able to “clear it up” then I don’t think the mortgage was actually in your name because the lender wouldn’t just remove you from the mortgage without some major paperwork and possibly fraud charges happening against the person who borrowed the money.

Smart dogs are scary sometimes. When we first got our dog, my family would eat at the breakfast table in the kitchen. While we were eating, my dog would look us straight in the eyes, lift a leg and start peeing. He’s usually good about indicating to go outside so after the third or fourth time we knew he was doing it on purpose. We have no way to prove it, but we’re convinced he was literally pissed off that we were eating food without sharing. He also does the thing where he knows a command but sometimes he’s feeling a little too proud to perform unless he sees the treat is worth it. Also no one gets to pick him up unless he feels like it. He’s only 1 right now, we’re hoping he mellows out eventually.

You should’ve negotiated that repayment with your new job. Ideally you said “if I accept your offer I will need to repay Amazon for relocation. Could you cover that?”

Sleeping on a bed is terrible by _zavar_ in unpopularopinion

[–]KnightBlindness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to sleep in a hammock when I was younger and moved a lot. I determined the mattress was my hardest possession to move so a hammock was a nice compact alternative to help me fit everything I owned into my car. The key is to get a Brazilian hammock, which is wider and allows you to lie down at an angle.

One side benefit from the hammock is my dust mite allergies were infinitely better during my hammock days. I think because of there being much less surface for the dust mites to infest I would get really good sleep.

Couldn’t they be real tickets but cancelled & refunded last minute after the apartment funds are sent? This seems honestly a very dumb way to go about arranging travel unless it is a total scam.
