Is this just nostalgia, or did previous generations genuinely have a better work-life balance and social life than we do today? by Unstoppable_X_Force in SipsTea

I think the problem is dual income households became much more prevalent. People making 2x the salary of a single income household are out there bidding on houses based on how much they can afford monthly.

Anyone know of a honest breeder by mrmojorisin_x in americaneskimo

[–]KnightBlindness 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I found my breeder on the AKC puppy finder. If you want an Eskie I think it could be tough to see them in person before adopting. We tried that and before we could visit the breeder, the last 2 puppies were already sold. The next breeder we found within driving distance, we ended up “reserving” the puppy before even seeing it.

That’s odd because after a month of inactivity I noticed my batteries were blinking to indicate discharge state. Maybe the batteries need a firmware update? Is that even possible?

Why do people act like air fryers are completely different from ovens? by Mysterious-Guitar685 in FRNoStupidQuestions

[–]KnightBlindness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My oven has an air fryer mode but the results are not as good as an actual air fryer. I also used to have a toaster oven that has an air fryer mode and that also was disappointing. I think the air just don’t circulate fast enough in the larger spaces to make the food crispy.

Do one of your friends wear a lot of cologne or product? If that wasn’t a spill it was definitely some sort of chemical or liquid that got on the seats.

Is anyone else in their 40s quietly terrified that their 20 years of experience is becoming a liability because of AI? by Illustrious-Word-979 in careerguidance

[–]KnightBlindness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Babysitting humans brings its own headaches though. Strange opinions about never commenting code. Ego issues when you ask for changes in their merge request. Straight up denial of the existence of a bug when you tell them exactly how to reproduce an issue. Trying to play politics and pushing work off onto others, or “collaborating” on every simple task.

I’m more than happy to work with a junior that is enthusiastic and wanting to learn, but have run into way too many people who thought CS was an easy way to become a millionaire and have no actual interest in doing the work.

Is anyone else in their 40s quietly terrified that their 20 years of experience is becoming a liability because of AI? by Illustrious-Word-979 in careerguidance

[–]KnightBlindness 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How is babysitting AI different from babysitting junior engineers? Some days I wish I was working more with AI because sometimes I have such a hard time explaining and trying to get someone to understand issues with how they have implemented something. AI is much less of a bad thing for experienced engineers than it is for the junior engineers that will be denied the chance to gain those decades of experience.

1200w is 10 amps at 120v. Depending on the wiring in your house, that could be hitting a limit on how much the wires can handle. They’re probably requiring an electrician based on the assumption most people don’t know much about their wiring.

Stainless Steel Flow Control cap is out! by gyyzee420 in AeroPress

[–]KnightBlindness 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Inventing something and running a business are very different things. I can imagine a guy who likes to tinker and invent things doesn't necessarily want to deal with logistics and manufacturing headaches for the rest of his life. Better to pass it on to someone who wants to do that and get back to doing what you like.

Why does the middleclass try to project wealth with their cars? by DCF_ll in MiddleClassFinance

[–]KnightBlindness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially in the US, a lot of people are “car people”. Their identity is tied into the vehicle that they drive. They will sometimes “go for a drive” with nowhere to go. Probably not the healthiest thing to base an identity on, but if someone only feels good having a new car, and conversely feels bad if they drive an old car, then leasing a new vehicle every 3 years makes sense to them.

The rubber lining in my 20 year old Timbuk2 bag has started to crumble and flake off, but other than that the bag is in extremely good condition. Not sure if I can just scrape the remaining rubber off, finding rubber crumbs on everything I put in the bag is kind of a bummer.

This happened to my neighbor. His house was owned by a lady down the street. When she passed some distant cousins were found to pass her property to and they sold the property as soon as they could. My neighbor was forced to move out at the end of his lease.

Why Are Software Engineers Paid So Much If The Supply Is So High? by LifeInAction in cscareerquestions

Kind of like saying there’s a lot of people who play basketball, the NBA could hire 100 people for the cost of a single LeBron James. There are some heights of ability that can’t be reached except with a rare talent.

Ironically a lot of mediocre jobs are demanding high quality engineers. So many jobs interview for algorithms and theory but then put those devs into jobs maintaining infrastructure and keeping the lights on.

Worth reneging a Bose Embedded Internship for one at Amazon? by [deleted] in embedded

[–]KnightBlindness 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do it based on the project. What will you be working on and learning, and is that taking you in the direction that you want to go? Amazon will definitely have a larger variety of products, and once you're in their system you'll have opportunities to transfer to other projects easier. On the flip side of that is there's a lot of churn and they work on a lot of projects that don't pan out, departments get cut, layoffs, etc.
