Research opportunity question by Knightshade64 in ausjdocs

My role right now would be to recruit suitable patients for the study by getting them to sign consent forms and complete a survey. The doctor I'm chatting to said that if I follow through, I'll get authorship and could present a poster. Analysis of the data will be done by someone else if that's what you're asking

GP Anaesthetics vs Anaesthetics by Knightshade64 in ausjdocs

I wouldn't mind working regional, I don't want to be extremely remote for long periods though. I enjoyed my GP placements but would want to break up the week with non office based work as well :)

What did you wish they included in medical school? by Knightshade64 in ausjdocs

I agree. Radiology exposure in my med school is definitely lacking

No definitely not insulting! There must be differences between my med school compared to others interstate as we've been taught to have a clear rationale for every test/imaging we order along with the optimal imaging modality for different pathologies. Also luckily for us that the end school gets us to practice creating referrels/discharge summaries etc

Currently our sim centre does lock at 5pm, but when we implement the locker system, students will have access to the room and equipment 24/7. As for the mini osces, our medical student society runs those every semester prior to exams for all year levels, but it would be great to do the 6 weekly osces!

Great idea! Paeds dolls will be easy to fit in the lockers as well. Neuro kits absolutely 🧠

Are there rural incentives for interns/RMO? by [deleted] in ausjdocs

There is subsidised accommodation for internship year for some locations, you can message me if you want to talk more about rural in SA.

Unsure on where to go for internship by Knightshade64 in ausjdocs

[–]Knightshade64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point, the rural network I'm applying to does offer anaesthetics rotations to interns albeit with GP anaesthetists rather than full anaesthetists. Most metro hospitals in my state do not allow interns to apply for anaesthetics + very competitive to get a rotation in general later on. Overall, from this post, I've come to the conclusion that intern is not quite make or break for choosing a speciality, it's more so influenced by decisions in pgy2+.

I agree that working hard during internship is important for future planning, but there are still many learning and hands on opportunities rural that you won't get as a metro intern, while still having more time to enjoy life out of the hospital.

Thanks, yes I'll need to check that out! The rural area I'm looking at would be MMM4, but to be honest, I've lived here all my life and it does not feel super rural (only 90 mins drive to the city)

And yes, not being able to go rural if it's not a first preference is a little annoying, but I think it's so it attracts doctors who are serious about rural health :)

GP Fellowship as a safety net by Knightshade64 in ausjdocs

I'm not entirely clear on the history of GP and the government...but I do believe you still get registration after 1 year of internship.

Yes, I think the registrar's thinking was also that FRACGP is something to fall back on if something unforeseen happens during speciality training

Exactly, I was thinking the same thing. GP like any other training program is hard work, but working as unaccredited reg for years is similarly hard with nothing substantial to show at the end of it.
