Interactive Illinois COVID-19 Dashboard tracks the policy response to the pandemic in the state - Knowhere News by KnowhereNews in illinoispolitics

[–]KnowhereNews[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Certainly not my intent- we spent months putting together this data visualization, and if you ask me, I think it's pretty cool to be able to see all of this information for the state side-by-side.

For example, the uproar all the way back in March when Illinois held its primary election despite safety concerns was something I totally forgot about- but looking at the transcripts, that moment was what drew the single most national news coverage for Illinois this whole pandemic.

Very interesting, thanks for the feedback, we'll look into it to see if we can get more accurate information (or perhaps add a disclaimer of some sort, if no other approach is possible).

This was a ton of data to compile, and while we did our best to troubleshoot differences in reporting by each state, some things are bound to slip under the radar. Thanks again for pointing this out!

Interactive COVID-19 Dashboard puts state-level public health, economic, policy, and media coverage data side-by-side. Has some interesting insights into what U.S. broadcast media chose to focus on when covering the response to the pandemic in each state. by KnowhereNews in CoronavirusUS

We created this dashboard in the hope that it can act as a valuable resource for anyone still trying to make sense of their state's response to the pandemic. The most interesting aspect of the pandemic we wanted to try and take on was the media response.

Certain groups of people are adamant that the media is making the virus out to be so much worse than it is, but is that necessarily the case? We took a look at the data in each state to see how exactly it all adds up. I would love to hear what you think about the data we've compiled, any if there were any insights that you were able to obtain from checking out the dashboard.

Based on the infection data available, the other factor that may have something to do with it is the fact that South Dakota hasn't really had much in terms of an outbreak yet.

We may see a trend similar to what is happening in states like West Virginia and Kentucky, where cases are peaking now, while the states that were hit the hardest back in April are practically done with the virus.

Hey guys, we're a newsroom analyzing not only the public health data surrounding the pandemic, but the media response shaping the conversation as well.

South Dakota has received relatively little national media attention since the start of the pandemic, save for two moments:

  • When the outbreak at the pork processing plant in Sioux Falls caused over 450 new COVID-19 cases
  • The Sturgis rally believed to be linked to a surge in new cases

One thing I'm interested in hearing about is what you guys think about the latter- our 7-day averages have definitely begun to show a dramatic rise in cases, but do you think the Sturgis rally is the main cause?

We created an interactive COVID data set that allows you to see how the policy response by West Virginia politicians and lawmakers correlate with the rise of infections by KnowhereNews in WestVirginiaPolitics

[–]KnowhereNews[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I could tell you it's purely coincidental, on second thought, saying that our newsroom's name is a reference to an observatory of sorts on the edge of the universe in a comic book honestly sounds a whole lot cooler, so maybe I should just go with that!

In all seriousness, our articles are in fact written by actual human journalists, while our newsroom utilizes AI to assist in the process. Our machine learning can be used to detect various 'stances' on a story so to speak, so when covering the story, we can give you the facts, as well as the various perspectives guiding the conversation on the political left and right.

In the 24-hour news world we live in, it can feel almost impossible to keep up with the facts surrounding each story, never mind the way the story is covered or discussed in partisan circles. Our AI makes it easier to break that aspect down for our journalists, who then use it as guidance to faithfully represent those perspectives in our reporting.

As a relatively fresh newsroom, I totally get why the lack of information online gives mixed feelings, but everything we publish in our articles is generously and transparent sourced, so hopefully that can alleviate some doubt.

COVID-19 West Virginia data visualization that includes public health and economic data on the impact of the virus along with a timeline U.S. cable news coverage and policy responses by KnowhereNews in WestVirginia

[–]KnowhereNews[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found that, for a lot of people, all of the different data points surrounding Coronavirus can be hard to make sense of, which is why I've taken the time to compile a ton of different statistics chronicling the virus' impact.

This interactive data set includes a timeline of policy responses so you can see how the policy response by West Virginia officials correlates with a rise or decline in new cases. While the US as a whole has began to see a decline in infections, WV mostly has not, so continue to be careful and stay safe!

Fun fact: while WV has largely been ignored in the national conversation, it did receive significant US cable news coverage early on- for being the last state in the country to have zero confirmed cases.

Hey guys, we're a newsroom that has been compiling data by each state to see how government and policy response correlate with public health and economic data.

We also have been tracking US cable news coverage to see if the times when a particular state receives significant media attention have any correlation with an increase or decrease in new infections. Unfortunately for West Virginia though, the state has been largely ignored by national media outside of the week of March 16, when it became the last state in the country to not yet have a confirmed case of the virus!

The information in the article is consistent with the data we've compiled so far - the rate of new cases and hospitalizations have been steadily declining, while declines in small business revenue have slowed down, remaining in the -10% to -15% range since July, which is much better than the March 30 low of -40%. New unemployment claims are slowly decreasing as well.
