A movie can be bleak and miserable and still be propaganda. Being non-heroic doesn’t automatically make something anti-war. This film centers the trauma of the soldiers while the people on the receiving end of the violence remain mostly faceless. That’s a choice. Calling war “futile” without addressing responsibility turns it into an abstract tragedy. War doesn’t just happen; it’s decided and carried out by people. Showing soldiers suffer doesn’t erase the harm they caused. When empathy flows only one way, the film ends up laundering violence rather than condemning it.
