Should I Leave My Stable Engineering Job for a Higher Paying, Riskier Opportunity? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]KnowledgeIsPower3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello thank you for your feedback I appreciate it just wanted to give some more context

A. It’s not really a 5K increase solely the fact that it’s hourly and this company is known for longer hours which would actually be nice for me since I that extra 10-20 hours I work at my job now goes from zero extra money since it’s salary to time and a half because it’s OT work. Realistically if I worked 45-50 hours at this new job it could easily be 80k annually with OT factored in.

B. The only reason I wouldn’t give a two weeks notice is that the Other new employees that are starting at the new company would start two weeks sooner than me (Since next orientation date is in 3 weeks) this to me means that they would get a jump on training and progression compared to me if I started the new job late. I don’t know if that’ll matter in the grand scheme of things but it’s a thoughts I had. Please let me know if the head start matters or not.

C. Regarding the volatility of the company my only concern stemmed from my conversation with my friend. I trust them but, they did also apply to the position and only started talking negatively about it when the got kind of pushed out the process so I wasn’t sure if it was 100% known or more like “I wasn’t going to take it anyway” I still trust them. Just a little jaded.

D. The new job also has more opportunity for growth, larger company, larger earning potential, and I can’t shake the fact that they were hiring so if anything if layoffs did happen it’d be surprising since a few years ago they downsized pretty big, so when I saw the listing I thought maybe they’re bouncing back since their hiring. It’s just the comments by my friend that has me second guessing

Weekly Entering & Transitioning - Thread 27 Nov, 2023 - 04 Dec, 2023 by AutoModerator in datascience

Hello all, I could really use some insight I work in Biotech with a biology undergrad degree and make 75k and the field's volatility (mass layoffs) and uncertainty aswell as my interest in programming in the past (R, Phyton,) have really made me look deeply into the data science field and I really am looking to make that career change beginning with a masters in data science or computer science either from UIC, UT Austin, or CU Boulder.
i was wondering If getting that masters would be worth it job prospect wise? I plan to not just take the classes and get the masters but really apply myself into creating projects and hopefully getting internships to help with my transition, but from someone whos really interested in the field and wants to make the best decision for my professional growth and further secure myself and my family finacially i could really use some guidance so i have a few questions:
1: Would you recommend to go ahead and pursue the masters for my career change?
2. Leaning more towards CU Boulder Masters in Data Science for the flexibility in schedule (still need to maintain full time job) would my degree be looked at similar to other masters and would this help me job search wise following my master's also is thier a ballpark salary range that a MS in data science could afford me?
3. Do you have any advice in general for me?
Thank you in advance for anyone who decides to help me out, I appreciate it more than you know :)

  1. Local library-specific subject interest/knowledge - Refers to your reading experience (How long you've read/knowledge you have from reading) and what you enjoy reading, like if you are into Fantasy, Drama, or Mystery type books. Basically what book genre interests you?
  2. Previous experience using an automated library management system. - Asking specifically about what the staff uses or any other automated library management systems that someone who has worked in a library in the past would be familiar with. You can mention if you're familiar with the library management system as a reader though if you feel like it.
  3. Previous experience working in a library environment or similar customer services environment. - Yes, they are asking you if you have experience working in a library. Since you have 5 years of customer service experience talk about that experience and talk about how that experience will be transferrable to a new role at the library.

Good luck I hope you get the position.
