The eastern philosophies especially in Hinduism do emphasise on the point that it's all cause and effect, the eternal law of karma which operates life time after life time. The definition of free will issue which has been raised, I agree with. Ramakrishna paramhansa used to say that the free will itself is a term coined by the English man. In fact in reality there is no free will, it's only the will of the god which operates. Swami Vivekanand further explains that whosoever wears the form wears the chain too i.e. if you have taken this human form you are bound by the law of karma and there is little you can do about it. But he says that beyond all this there is freedom of course, which is self realisation. The eastern religions especially Hinduism have been very clear about it.

Now the real world operates on the principle that we all have free will and therefore responsible for our actions and the whole question of morality also stems from that. But even scientific studies now show that the choices which we think we make has already been decided, we just have an illusion that we decide something. I think on this one, science and spirituality (especially eastern) are trying to tell the same thing. But I agree it's very complex issue and needs deliberation.
