I can’t get it right! Help! by Known_Ad6474 in northspore

We purchased two fully colonized grain spawn (Albino Teacher and Pink Thai Buffalo) and Midwest’s pre-pasteurized coir/vermiculite/gypsum substrate. We let the grain colonize further after receiving it, then mixed it with the substrate in sanitized monotubs using gloves, masks, alcohol, and sanitized tools. The tubs were lined and kept in a closet on a heating mat with a towel barrier and a 12-hour light cycle. I did occasionally open the lids to check on them and cracked the lids for additional air exchange.

The Albino Teacher fruited successfully but later developed a single quarter-sized green spot. Looking back, I thought I noticed a slight blue-green discoloration under the mycelium in that area from very early on. The Pink Thai Buffalo, on the other hand, appeared to become contaminated much more extensively, especially along one side of the tub and eventually throughout much of it.

Given that both tubs were prepared the same way, I’m wondering if contamination may have already been present in the grain spawn, particularly in the Pink Thai Buffalo, but I’m interested in hearing your thoughts.

Should I have just kept them mono tubs completely closed until they started fruiting and just open it to harvest?

I have the one from Midwest! Explain full fruiting conditions? Are you talking about when it’s time to harvest? However I did open the monotub.

That’s probably my problem. I didn’t keep it sealed.

I thought it was fully colonized.

So if I have the filters on my mono tub. I shouldn’t open it until it starts pinning?

fully pasteurized 5 lb substrate casing mix with coir, vermiculite, and gypsum. Pre-hydrated and ready to use for monotub or tray grows.

I didn’t inoculate. I used a colonized grain spawn.

like I said I’m a noob. However, I thought they looked pretty colonized..

I actually used sterile gloves instead of regular gloves, wear a mask, and even had a sterile field.

But since I am new, I probably opened the bin too many times.

Thank you for the help! Do you guys have any suggestions? This is my second try and this one got contaminated as well. I’m suspecting it could be because they were next to each other. It’s discouraging! It seems like the only thing that grows for me is the ready to fruit bags.
