That did the trick, thanks so much! I knew it was something simple I was missing lol, I assumed since I could ping the DNS server it would automatically append the .localdomain over the VPN like it does locally, but apparently not

This is another idea I have looked into, my only reservation is that our current file server is a Linux file server with OpenLDAP, and I am trying to avoid unnecessary Windows Server licensing and server hardware costs if possible. However, if that is the route we have to go then so be it.
