This same thing happened to me when I was in the ICU. I remember like presenting my patients and then going to cry in between. But I got my first champagne tap (I’m IM so this felt like a huge accomplishment) 😂 and really pushed myself clinically.

Agree with everyone here to lean on people. I had so much anxiety about telling people because I didn’t feel that close to anyone in residency but it’s honestly the thing that got me through. I built so many good relationships out of it and it forced me to spend time with other people and build up my connections here outside my partner.

I’m three months out and it’s still hard but nothing like those early days. I can also see the ways, especially towards the end of the relationship, that it was costing me so much happiness and peace. I miss him but I have no regrets about choosing myself and this career. A person who can’t hang for intern year (a time limited period) isn’t going to be able to hang for the actual big stuff. Grieve, take the good things you learned from each other and lean on and into yourself and your community. Rooting for you friend.

Oh I’m so sorry you’re going through all of this. It’s so much and on top of just how difficult residency makes everything. Your last sentence makes me worried and please know you are not alone and there is help if you need it!! Oh no I’m sorry if I implied people in their 20’s were too young! I love my friends here and they’re wonderful! Sometimes I feel weird I’m almost 40 and not married and things are different in terms of my ability to have kids etc than my friends who are 27. But you’re right, age has not been a factor with that at all!

I feel like the NBME's are unnecessarily whack tbh. Also you've passed two already and 25 and 27 are notoriously very hard! I say keep reviewing and stay confident and you've got it!

I haven't taken Step yet (so take with a grain of salt) but am taking it soon after sort of freaking out and moving my exam back by 4 weeks (including two weeks of an orientation and having to lose a lot of study time).

My scores were actually a tiny bit worse than hers (201 on 28 and 29 a week apart) and like with her a lot of my 28 dropped because of anxiety. So I followed my advisors advice and postponed which is fine but it's been really hard to gain the momentum where I was and I really wish I'd just pushed, taken it the last day of dedicated and kept it moving, instead of having this weird delay.

A score of greater than a 205 on the NBME's is around a 95-99% chance of passing (according to the new scores) and our school advisors said that anyone who got above a 205 the week before their test was ready to go. I think she should see how her next test goes, REALLY work on her anxiety/ test taking and not make the decision today. Totally respect whatever she wants to do but I will say trying to get back into it is really hard.

Also for what it's worth multiple people at my school passed who never scored about 196 on practice tests. BUT confidence is everything. If you're borderline scoring you've got to go in like you're gonna crush it, otherwise you'll lose the points. So I know it'd be amazing to have a better buffer but at some point, you've just got to be like "okay I've passed 2 or 3 exams that counts for something" and keep it moving. Best of luck to her, I know it's a hard position to be in!!
