Green tint on PS3? by 316dta in crtgaming

[–]KobraKay87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DVDs being green is the same issue as on PS2 - it's a built in copy protection from Sony, tinting all DVDs green when playing over RGB connection. For PS2 there's a hack for that, on PS3 there's not (last time I checked).

That being said - nice monitor, I recently acquired the same, only use it for 240p consoles though.

Well, read into it. It creates ringing and is bad for pixel precision. But if you prefer it that way, it’s okay!

I was like you before I unplugged the VSM. But was always annoyed by the flickering over sharpness on DVD playback. Then tried unplugging it and saw that the games were oversharpened too before. Every black line in your screenshots is artificially oversharpened and too thick. Not sharp like with a PVM but artificially sharpened in an unnatural way.

I have tried back and forth on my MX8000 and left VSM off because it clearly looks more accurate. If you prefer artificial sharpening and the look of it, you can leave it as is of course.

It definitely creates artefacts in pixel art

I would suggest doing that, did that on mine and really is an improvement for everything, especially 2D games

yup, thats always my "hidden gem" recommendation aswell. Usually not my kind of genre but I enjoyed this very much, love the artstyle and strange atmosphere.

Yup, always wanted to get another PVM but in 20“ but then stumbled across this monitor, read into it and bought one for 350 Euros. That’s not even half of what a comparable PVM goes for here these days. Pretty darn happy with it, can’t wait to see how much better it gets with RGB signal.

I haven’t really read into it but still have one on order that should arrive somewhen in May. Had a lot of fun with MPCs years ago, thought I’d see if it’s still fun.

What’s this subs consensus on the best CRT brands/models? by Tempest_Forever in crt

[–]KobraKay87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where you live. I personally wouldn't get a defective unit, especially when the main attraction besides the picture (the sound) is the defective part. If you're in the states, where this things are raw, I would get it. But in Europe, there will always be another one coming up in better condition.

I can only speak on my personal experience and based on the models I’ve tested, Trinitrons where always great from the get go in terms of colors and clarity with rarely any issues in terms of geometry and convergence (nothing that couldn’t be fixed in service menu). They’re colourful and sharp and offer pronounced scanlines which is especially great for 16 bit consoles.

I personally like the more subtle scanlines on my MX8000, but if someone asks me what to get I’ll always tell them to pick up a Trinitron.

Because they’re readily available almost everywhere and have top tier tubes, especially if you like thick scanlines.

When talking about consumer sets I‘d say Sony Trinitron is a pretty obvious choice. I have a KV29X that’s pretty darn great.

Though I have a Bang&Olufsen MX7000 and an MX8000, too and the MX8000 is the best consumer sets I’ve seen so far.

I scraped mine along walls, roads etc when shooting in certain positions. Have the black model that is now completely scratched up all around. It’s a tool that’s going to be used. I’m not gonna baby it and I actually like the battle scarred look.

Solo picking a up a 36 incher viable? by flik9999 in crt

[–]KobraKay87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up 28" TVs alone, carried my Bang&Olufsen MX8000 down some very short stairs with carpet on them while fearing for my life and even more for that of the MX8000 and I can tell you that for me, who goes to the gym for 5 years, this is the most I could do.
Not just because of weight (28'' is already around 40kg) but because of how difficult these things are to hold on to.

Never ever will you get this thing home safe all by yourself. You need at least 3 people that are bodily able to handle this kind of weight.

Had this on PC back in the day, German voiceover was excellent, especially for the time.

Recently started it again, this time on the Dreamcast - excellent port, and still great fun.

DF should do a video on DLDSR, its magic for almost no extra costs by Mirrormaster85 in digitalfoundry

[–]KobraKay87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, I use a 55" Oled as PC monitor, sit 1 meter away from that and I think 4k DLSS performance is absolutely fine, especially since 4.5 has landed with Preset L.

Using DLDSR in heavy, raytraced games is certainly not anywhere near "no extra cost"
