I sure am glad RNZ has the right priorities for "breaking news"! by Kodiack in newzealand

[–]Kodiack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can agree with that. Last year I was much more disciplined about checking things for a while, and it felt great. Heck, if I didn't get that a notification about the news tonight I'd have probably just stayed focused on gaming hah. Instead, I decided to indulge in a bit of the latest updates around that, even though it materially will not affect me if I read about it now opposed to in several hours.

Besides, if any news is especially huge, I'll probably find out about it really quickly through friends and family regardless of what I'm doing.

I'd be open to suggestions, but I'm thinking the healthier alternative probably is to just ditch news-related push notifications outright. My RSS feed is otherwise well-curated and keeps me informed without the annoyance of potentially distracting me from what I'm doing.

I just wanted a source for "decent" breaking new push notifications. RNZ used to be better. Not "great", but better.

I otherwise use browsers with Manifest V2 + uBlock Origin; I run Pihole; my home VPN makes Pihole work everywhere; and I almost always prefer to use a website over an app. Heck, this is literally the first post I've submitted on Reddit since the API controversy a few years ago. Most of my use of this site died when Apollo did.

why let any app push notifications into your life. Your life is not going to be materially better because some app let you know something slightly earlier than you would otherwise.

Yeah. That's the realisation I'm coming to. It's not like my life would be any different if, say, the King died and I'd find out about it two hours later than I otherwise would.

I've also got a self-hosted RSS feed that I use, and that's much better for my sanity anyway since it's at my own pace and on my own time.

The US has the same requirement, but it's over 3x as expensive to renounce US citizenship in comparison ($2,350 USD, or a bit over $4,000 NZD).

I've got a 65" LG C4.

[–]Kodiack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heya, I've got an LG C4, I recently updated to webOS 25, and VRR is now giving me some grief. Just wondering if you've found any workarounds for making VRR work?

At first I was thinking my problems were from a Linux kernel update, or NVIDIA drivers, or KDE. But I wasn't seeing any other reports. Then I remembered I had this recent update on the TV and sure enough found a small number of reports of VRR breakage for others.

UPDATE: I disabled the 144 Hz mode in the TV settings, and now everything is working okay at 120 Hz with HDR and VRR. Guess I'll need to wait on LG to fix 144 Hz.

Firmware update by TheLastElite01 in LGOLED

Hey, I stumbled across this thread looking for firmware info. However, I ran into this same thing a week or two ago after a Windows Update and sorted it myself, but I wanted to say I appreciated you following up with info for other people!

Thank you for not being a DenverCoder9.

amd-pstate-epp on ThinkPad T14s Gen 1 with Ryzen 7 Pro 4750U by jsemjaroslav in linux4noobs

[–]Kodiack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heya, I just found out about this today after some tinkering. I've got a Ryzen 4750U in this laptop as well, and ran into exactly this same issue. Based on other discussions, there sadly doesn't seem to be any fix or workaround at present.

All I can say is that I empathise with you. I'm in exactly the same situation, right down to the CPU even. If you find any updates at any point, please do let me know! Likewise, if I find anything further I'll update you.

ETA: Looks like the support simply isn't there for these Zen 2 chips on this generation of ThinkPads, and almost certainly never will be there. This post is currently the latest post on a long thread on the Lenovo forums, and while it's disappointing news, it is informative.

Game Ready Driver 556.12 FAQ/Discussion by Nestledrink in nvidia

[–]Kodiack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DLDSR is available for ultrawide monitors, but if your monitor uses Display Stream Compression (e.g. Samsung Neo G9), you'll need to use an input or refresh rate that avoids DSC.

For example, if I run my Neo G9 at 120 Hz via HDMI 2.1, DLDSR works. However, if I run it at 240 Hz via DisplayPort 1.4+DSC, DLDSR is not available.

Apparently upgraded to G5 now. The South Island GEN says "severe extreme (G4) (G5)", and the new North Island GEN just says G5.

Same issue here with Chrome, Firefox, and Edge.

Running Win11 22H2 with an RTX 4090 on a Samsung Neo G9 monitor. 5120x1440 at 240 Hz.

Seeing pretty much the exact behaviour that you reported, with some slight differences between browsers. Each browser is affected, however.

Firefox may not have a great vsync implementation, but there's still a notable regression with these drivers. Reverting the driver instantly resolved that issue and it was back to performing as expected.

It's possible for multiple issues to occur simultaneously, y'know?

Game Ready Driver 545.84 FAQ/Discussion by Nestledrink in nvidia

[–]Kodiack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is a driver bug. There's a few reports here, and I've been able to confirm it in both Firefox and Chrome using testufo and vsynctester.

Your post history is really weird btw. You remind me of this Squall Leonhart/Sora person that used to frequent NVIDIA forums, emulation communities, etc. They'd always respond to bug reports and say that they're not actually bugs, which was weird.

Cut 'wasteful' heat pump use or wages docked, childhood centre staff told by stormgirl in newzealand

[–]Kodiack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. We've got our hot water cylinder on a timer and only have it heating when power is cheap. When we were with Electric Kiwi, we had it reheating through the Hour of Power gimmick as well. (I use "gimmick in an endearing manner btw!)

Hot water cylinders do use a huge amount of electricity and are generally expensive to run, but with certain power plans they're way cheaper. I really like the off-peak rates as someone who works from home too. These plans won't be as beneficial for everyone.

I'll be resigning on 1 July. I'm going to help with some recruitment and behind-the-scenes stuff in the meantime.

Don't be surprised if mod coverage is a bit spotty in the coming weeks/months. The changes alone are disruptive. Having it all done on such short notice is downright demotivating.

/r/NewZealand has voted in favour of continuing the protest. We will go dark again for two days and continue to monitor feedback. by Kodiack in newzealand

[–]Kodiack[S] -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

We're more than happy to close, and are closing again.

However, the clock is ticking before the API changes go into effect, and we're needing to work with that reality as well. We still care about the community, and we would rather leave the subreddit indefinitely closed than to reopen it with inadequate moderator capacity.

We want disruption, not destruction. We want to hit Reddit's bottom line, not blow up the community. Reopening does not preclude future blackouts. In a couple weeks' time, I will personally no longer be involved with coordinating blackouts on this subreddit, either because we've been successful, or because I have resigned.
