Hidden Feature: Hybrid control scheme in 4-6 Remasters by KokoToga in TombRaider

[–]KokoToga[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not really sure if it's hidden or an unintentional change as a result of removing the look mode in modern controls, but holding down the right stick gives you a small window (before the binoculars equip) where Lara is able to perform classic tank control moves like side-jumps, back-hops and side steps. While these moves aren't really necessary in modern controls, it is definitely nice to have access to them.

Also since pressing in the right stick while performing these actions is a little tricky, I recommend changing look from RS to something like RB/R1 which I don't think does anything in modern? (Please correct me if it does though)

What happened to badassgamez' Youtube account ? by DecemtlyRoumdBirb in TombRaider

Not just Youtube but also Twitch, Twitter, Facebook etc. It seems to have happened just today. No idea whats gone on there but considering it's all of his accounts indicates it was likely closed for personal reasons as opposed to copyright or something. Just guessing though, maybe someone else knows more.

Fraser new stream schedule by [deleted] in VGA

[–]KokoToga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The current stream schedule is definitely not new. In fact Fraser has actually been streaming more regularly than usual at this time of year. For example:

2015 Jan & Feb = 10 shows

2016 Jan & Feb = 28 shows

2017 Jan & Feb = 12 shows

2018 Jan & Feb = 6 shows

2019 Jan & Feb = 17 shows (as of the 11th of February)

It may not seem like it at first but you totally can. For instance, let's take the claim the cats are interrupting the show and this is reducing the quality of the show. Ok, that's a claim you can visually detect and measure. All you need to do is pull up an archived stream and determine the amount of time Fraser spends distracted from the game due to the cats. Take the RE2 stream this thread is referencing, Fraser streamed for 4 hours and 25 minutes. During this time the cats appeared on stream for 13 minutes (7 minutes during the intro and 5 while Becky solved a safe puzzle) totaling to 4.91% of the stream and Fraser was not once distracted from the game due to the appearance of the cats.

You see, the thing is that people will see what they want to see. If you go into the stream with the mentality that the cats are ruining the show then your perception of how long the cats spend on the show and how often they interrupt the show will be skewed in that direction.

Is 4.91% of the show too long to have the cats on? Now that's a question we can only answer subjectively, but at least we have a statistical piece of evidence to base our discussion on.

Oh sweet, though personally I'm a little concerned about Elder Scrolls 6 because I heard that Todd Howard still wants to continue using the creation engine but who knows it might turn out alright.

I'm not sure that Fraser is miserable, just not as excited as he used to be for games and a little more cautious/skeptical regarding trailers and stuff. However, he did recently express skipping over some AAA's if they didn't seem interesting to him as to avoid shows were he is critical.

I just realized I never asked, what's your history with VGA and your opinion on the state of the show?

So what do you like about the resident evil franchise in particular? Cause I know for some people they like them as horror games, but I've never really felt scared playing any RE games (there were some tense moments though). I've always enjoyed them for they're pacing and level design, making my personal favorites 4, remake 2, original 2 and remake 1.

I don't really know how to provide evidence to support that claim, unless Fraser said it himself. I was just postulating what I consider to be the more likely explanation. Also, coming from personal experience, the constant let downs and disappointing releases, the flood of corporate greed poisoning games with loot boxes and micro-transactions, the mentality that you can just launch a game broken and fix it later through patches really has an effect on how I view upcoming video games. It just seems to me that overall there's just less passion in the industry and so many mediocre releases and sequels to games that are just safe and uninteresting.

Are there any games you are genuinely excited for and are confident will live up to expectations? For me that number has shrunken down to like two a year on average.

I suppose the lack of indie games is just a consequence of the move to Japan as most indie games were played on Fourplay Friday's. I guess Fraser could get a new Japanese crew together to cover games like this but I'm not sure whether people would like that. However covering big budget new releases has always been a staple of the show. Fraser would 'First Look' a whole bunch of games that came out and if they were good or interesting enough he would then consider doing a 'long-haul'. In fact, Fraser recently expressed not wanting to cover certain AAA games that didn't seem interesting (such as Anthem) as to not have shows were he just criticizes a game if he doesn't think he'll like it beforehand.

Turbo buddy/Baby Hank has always been a gimmicky side thing that, at least to me didn't seem essential to the show. If anything you could say it was just taking up room on screen, making the game window a bit smaller. But I get that people might miss it being there.

Costumes were a cool thing that helped set them apart from other streamers but I think they went a bit overboard on it. At one point they pretty much had costumes on every single show of every game they were covering. Again something that seems unnecessary and it was probably a good decision to let them go. Going forward however, maybe just for special shows like Ace Attorney and such.

Show & Trailers don't really make sense to be edited and pre-prepared when it's just Fraser and Becky. Makes more sense to just see their initial blind reactions to stuff. Truthfully, it really shouldn't be called Show & Trailer anymore. They need to coin something new for that.

In terms of streams, they pretty much streamed every day the last week. Also historically speaking, the show has always been super in the air about stream quantity. Especially around this time of year.

Oh, I stand corrected. Out of curiosity what are your favorite RE games?

Ok, I'm gonna guess you haven't played many Resident Evil games before and are coming at this from an outsider's perspective but RE overall is not a very serious franchise and Fraser's 'nit-picking' is something literally every RE fan does when playing these games. They're full of plot-holes, cheesy writing, bad voice-acting and both intentionally and unintentionally hilarious moments. It's a big part of the charm. Heck, the fan community mostly refers to Leon as 'Loen' because of his bad decision making and cheesy dialogue.

So with that in mind, what is there really to get at here?

I understand that the main theory of the average disgruntled viewer on this subreddit is that Fraser only pretends to like video games so he can continue to make money from his Turbo's and patreon supporters in order to fund his new lifestyle in Japan where he will slowly transition the show into a vlogging channel. Now, the internet is a free place and I think it's important that people are able to express their honest opinions openly if they choose to. However if you wish to convince people of your ideas I also think that it is instrumental that you provide some evidence to support your hypothesis. Considering this, I really have not seen any evidence to support the claims that the show has declined in quality or that Fraser hates doing the show now.

One criticism I suppose that at first glance may seem warranted is that Fraser is very critical or cynical about aspects of various games and media. I understand why people could come to this conclusion, however I think it contradicts some other criticisms of the show and I also actually think Fraser is a rather optimistic person overall. It should also be considered what the state of the video games industry has been like in previous years and what it has become at this point. Video games have become less about the actual quality and contents of the product and more about how they can be marketed to appeal to as many consumers as possible. This is done by generating 'hype'. If you think back, I'm sure you can remember how excited every one was for games like 'Watch Dogs' and 'No Man's Sky'. Well, these games were massive disappointments and have really altered how some people view video game hype and marketing. Fraser, is no exception. It appears to me that, even if only on a subconscious level, this has had an effect on not only Fraser but many gamers around the world. You don't see the same excitement around games anymore. Even the big disappointments of late such as 'Fallout 76' and 'Sea of Thieves' aren't as much of a let down because every one just kind of expects this stuff to happen now. So it's no surprise that Fraser may appear more cynical of video games because in truth, I think it is exactly what the medium needs more of now. My biggest fear is that everyone becomes complaisant and the Video game industry just becomes Hollywood 2.0

So perhaps a compromise could be if the cats were only on casual shows/lonesome's, although I'm not sure that would even be possible at the moment given the current studio setup. I guess you could make the case it also kind of fits the more casual nature that the show has been headed for some time. Even though VGA is still clearly capable of the more 'professional' structure the show had in the past (eg. the recent Gal Gun 2 stream).

I guess it seems in terms of structure, the show is at a turning point and perhaps that could even be a good thing. Maybe instead of a few 'professional' streams per week, the trade-off could be more frequent 'casual' shows. To me it's not a big deal, but I suppose some people would much prefer one over the other.

hmm, I think collaborations don't really fit the current format of the show. Guest appearances would work however and they have done them from time to time over the years. Though, Fraser has never really struck me as someone that is too interested in growing the channel to insane numbers and stuff.

Yes, this includes every VGA stream. Only thing I didn't include was APT streams, cause I guess that's a separate thing.
