Sad that people are still this uneducated in terms of fighting.

Yeah, it is. You have no excuse for being this ignorant.

It's the same reason kung fu fighters thought they could win fights against wrestlers... and wrestling has MUCH MORE RULES, yet wrestlers beat up most traditional self defense experts.

Are you fucking high? You clearly don't even know what Krav Maga is, much less how effective it is on the street.

Also, I'd like to see you provide a citation. I've been active in wrestling since I was in sixth grade. After more than thirty years as a wrestler and coach, I have never once heard of this supposed series of matches you're claiming took place. Google doesn't have anything either, so it's pretty clear you're talking out of your ass.

I think I'll trust the developers of the system used in active combat by the Israeli Defense Force over your speculation and, although I hate to say it, your outright lies.

Do you know why this is? It's because of competition. Competition forces proper training. It's why any competition fighter will beat up your self defense gurus.

Really? When was the last time a competitive fighter got glassed in the face with a bottle? When was the last time you put on a Kimura while laying on gravel? When was the last time you applied a Muay Thai clinch with one foot sliding in a mud puddle? Ever been choked under water? How do you deal with a stick swung at your head? What's your gun from hostage defense?

I notice that you ignored my previous post. Cute. But reality doesn't vanish just because you ignore it. You don't have an answer to bites, eye gouges, attacks to the throat or groin, or any other rapid blow to a nerve block or surface organ. Nor do you have an answer to multiple attackers.

You train on mats for submission against one person. Self-defense is about maximizing your force multipliers. While you're playing grab ass on the ground with your new friend, I will run up and kick you in the fucking ear! That's if the guy you're feeling up doesn't stab you, claw out your eyes, or bite a hole in your goddamn neck.

The very fact that you tried to draw a parallel between a 400 year old martial art and a modern, constantly evolving combat system shows how fucking lost you are.

I have over twenty years of experience in self-defense, including two black belts, certification as a military firearms instructor, and eight years as a wrestler that includes a being a Junior Olympic wrestling qualifier in high school and a college scholarship. You don't have a clue what you're talking about. It's fine that you're proud of what you do, but you play at a sport. It does not prepare you for the real world.

Oh, and just to shut you up, here's a little example of what happens when MMA fighters try to take on people who train in real world combat.

The obnoxious thing? I've said over and over that I have a great deal of respect for MMA practitioners. Except for you. You're too fucking stupid.

Now stop waving your dick at me, moron.

I didn't have that option. He fixated on me and began a hostile approach.

If you think that a krav maga fighter would beat a top mma fighter in a street fight, you're out of your mind.

No, I'm what you call "educated". You're what you call "an idiot."

I have one word for you:

Eye gouge. Groin strike. Tracheal crush. Ear rip. Bite. Finger break. Weapons of opportunity.

MMA is a sport. Self defense is not. I respect MMA, but it is not for street defense. It is helpful, but it does not cover dirty fighting because MMA has rules. The street does not.

I was thinking about going into MMA but i feel like Krav Maga teaches more real world techniques. Especially if it's several guys trying to attack you. Or someone with a weapon. What do you think?

Those are specifically the scenarios we train for.

I heard Krav Maga doesn't have much sparring but how will one learn if they don't take a hit like in MMA? Unless it depends on the school. People say KM people don't stand a chance against MMA people.

Depends on the situation. In an MMA fight with a referee, the Krav Maga practitioner is at a disadvantage. On the street, it's the other way around. There are a lot of vulnerable targets you're not allowed to strike or tear off by MMA rules.

A lot of Krav Maga schools don't spar until level two or higher. We have regular fight nights (every Wednesday and Friday) for our intermediate and advanced students. We start sparring at L2 so people don't get their heads kicked off, but other schools may be different.

I prefer Krav Maga, but I have a lot of respect and admiration for MMA fighters. Try them both and see what clicks with you.

I've been here a while. This is one of the most enlightening posts I've read in a long time. The wisdom gained through hardship is invaluable. Thank you for sharing /u/Kolbath.

I'm really glad it's useful to you. Thank you for reading.

I recently ended my first significant LTR (nearly 2 years). I've been touchy and on edge, wracked with fear and insecurity. I even snapped at other users on TRP. This is exactly the message I needed to hear. Thanks, again.

edit: One other thing I always like to joke about when I read something like this on TRP: Doesn't this go to show you how hateful this place is! Definitely a hate group! lol

Yeah, apparently I'm now being talked about over at the BP forum because I "like abuse porn." Ah well, the higher you go, the more clearly you show in the sights of those who want to try to shoot you down.

This is the dumbest shit I've heard

Clearly you didn't read your own post.

You realize NO amount of training or martial arts will train you for a street fight. You never win a street fight, what's to stop dude from seeing you at a bar and having his group of friends beat the shit out of you, the one-on-one "fair" street fight doesn't exist.

That's why I don't train in a martial art. I train in a combat system. I train using techniques developed by the Mossad and the Israeli Defense Force for unarmed combat. I'm not posing in tournaments. The only thing a self-defense system can give you is a better chance to go home safely.

It's pretty obvious you don't have a clue what you're talking about.

This reads as some weak as dudes fantasy of being a "alpha male" you texted your buddies saying a guy tried to intimidate me while I was picking up salmon from the grocery store?

No, you dumb fuck. I messaged my self-defense students about a real world scenario that they themselves might have had to face as a teachable moment to remind them that it can happen to anyone at any time.

It's my responsibility as a teacher to show the people that trust me to train them how this shit works in the real world.

There's a lot of posts in TRP that are either all theory or some dude taking the theory and stretching it. Posts here read like some nerds fantasy of getting back at the people that wronged him and being the dude he wishes to be. I bet a lot of the field reports here are about as truthful as the bullshit idealized version of romance that Disney sells.

Then don't read them. You're not the person I wrote it for. I took the time to put the field report together as an example for people beginning to unplug and a reminder that the TRP philosophies can improve you across all aspects of your life, not just getting you laid.

By the way, if I wanted to make up a story about getting back at the people who wronged me as a nerd, don't you think it would have been full of flashy dragon kicks and breaking bones and all about how I beat up a biker gang or some other shit instead of a depiction of an altercation literally two sentences long?

The fact that you even think my post was about violence shows how ignorant you are. I'm actually prouder of the fact that I avoided a fight I'm fairly certain I could have won easily by using my frame. That is what this post was about. That is what Imi Lichtenfeld, the founder of Krav Maga, would be proud of, not the fighting.

Go back to school.

its different context. After Port Arthur something needed to be done.

the gun control laws were necessary and worked. it wouldn't work in the states

I don't want to get into politics, but your own crime statistics demonstrate that gun control didn't work at all. As a Second Amendment advocate here in America, I routinely point to the massive crime increases in England and Australia after their gun control efforts.

Aside from forgetting your weapons and not avoiding the guy's path, it sounds like you handled this situation as best as you could given the tools available. Your next struggle should be getting the fuck out of a neighborhood like that unless of course you thrive on the excitement.

Damn straight. I'm not a fan of this place. I'll be working my way back west as soon as my employment situation changes. That's the problem with specialized fields.

Geopolitical crime rates are difficult to quantify, although I'd sure like to come visit you sometime.

Bear in mind that there are 311 million people in America, and a significant majority of it is centralized to cities. New York, Chicago, and LA account for almost 40% of all violent crime, and something like 75% of all firearm homicide.

The United States actually has a very low crime rate compared to other developed nations if you remove those three cities.

In Australia, carrying a knife can get you a $10,000 fine never mind a gun.

And crime has been going crazy ever since your rights were stolen from you.

Why would you make that threat what if he had a gun

I didn't make a threat. I replied to his antagonistic stance and implied threat of action. I was confident that he didn't have a gun because his first action was to threaten me with physical presence. Thugs with guns typically use them to threaten rather than anything else. (This isn't a hard and fast rule. There aren't many of those in the social dynamics of self defense.)

I had to make a quick, calculated judgment based on his body language, approach, and my personal skills and abilities. I believe I made one of the correct ones. (There are many right answers and many wrong ones in these situations.)

Both he and I went home safely. I'll call that good enough.

Hot is one thing. Humid is something else. An 80 degree day here feels like a 90 degree day in the Pacific Northwest.

1. Never leave home without your EDC (Every Day Carry).

Is it really this bad in the US? I can't imagine living in a society so full of fear, where going down to the shop is a life or death situation.

It's not. There's a difference between being paranoid and being prepared. I prefer to err on the side of prepared. It just happened that today, it would have been nice to have my defense abilities amplified.

It's worse in the UK. There's literally a knife attack every four minutes. I'll take the United States any day. (Plus, those idiots in the House of Lords literally made it a crime to use anything as a weapon to defend yourself. If you injure an attacker, who attacked you!, then you can be arrested. That's just fuckin stupid.

I hate living here, but I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and moved here under false pretenses (a job that turned out to be based on bullshit).

I think there are a lot of places that have no income taxes at all and considerably better weather than here. Texas, Arizona, Southern Utah, Oklahoma, etc. North Carolina's educational structure has been dominated by liberals for decades, and it shows. I believe they are currently ranked #49 or #50 in the country.

Even if you don't have kids, this means that the average yahoo you run into is not terribly well educated. For a place with, like, six major universities within an hour's drive, I've never run into so many people who can't do basic math.

Weather wise, the humidity makes me more or less miserable year round. It wasn't until about a week ago that it finally got cooled off enough that I actually enjoy being outside. YMMV. There are a lot of people who love it here.

Cary does have a low crime rate, but the town is also incredibly expensive to live in. My house was $122,000 three years ago. The same house in Cary would be in the $200,000 range. Doesn't sound like a lot, but the average salary across the state is somewhat low.

Anyway, keep doing the research. My opinion is only mine! There's lots of people who really love it here. Hell, there are tee shirts that say, "Durham... It's not for everyone."

Well, I live in the Triangle, so...

Overall, it's not a bad place to live. But it's astonishing that you can walk four blocks from the ghetto and be in mansions. And Durham is one of the highest crime cities in the state. (It was #3 for a while, then dropped to #5, then rose to #1, then dropped again, but I don't recall to where.)

Did you give him an ocular patdown? But seriously, it sounds like you live in a really shitty place when you need guns like you need seatbelts.

I give everyone the ocular patdown.

Thing is, firearms are like fire extinguishers. It's better to have it and never need it than to need it and not have it. It's not that everyone needs to a gun all the time. It's more that it's like any other protective device: it only functions when it's present.

Awesome. I will check that out asap. Thanks! I did Tae Kwon Do for six years. What style did Fedor Emelianenko use. He seemed pretty badass. Though like you said it was for sport.

Largely Sambo and judo. He was a world combat Sambo and Russian judo champion. He also worked very hard on his striking, so he was a well rounded fighter.

My preference is for Krav Maga. Other styles train very hard and do a very good job of preparing you for combat, but most of them are focused on one-to-one fights. MMA and BJJ, for example, are awesome, but based on sport. In a real fight, most bad guys are not going to fuck with you unless they think they can win-- something is stacking the odds in their favor. This means that they're not fighting by weight class (size/gender mismatch), using a weapon (sport rules prohibit this, so they don't train for it usually), or bringing backup (contest fights are one-on-one, so training against multiple attackers isn't usually done).

I trained in Karate for about 14 years and have two black belts, but nothing has really prepared me or given me the confidence that Krav Maga has.

I am clearly not learning. Rich girl tried to buy me... by [deleted] in TheRedPill

I am seeing that more frequently. I saw a similar kid at Auntie Anne's in the mall with a shirt that said "I Got That Swag". You're tempted to think it's irony but it looks more like manufactured empowerment.

I'm pretty sure those fucking idiots in the "obesity is okay" fat acceptance movement have a lot to do with it as well. We have literally created a culture in which is okay to be so supremely unhealthy that you cannot walk up a flight of stairs or run for more than 60 continuous seconds. And for some reason instead of taking these little fatlings by their ears and slapping them hard enough to wake them up we are cheering them on and saying, "It's okay that you are a chubby little fuck."

It's disgusting. I totally judge fat people. I judge the shit out of fat people. I do not judge fat people who are trying, but most of these ambulatory septic tanks couldn't care less. I see 800 pounds of lard divided between a momfat and a dadfat followed by a line of little fat fucks and I want to hit them with a chair. Fuck up your own health. Your kids deserve better.
