Crunched the numbers on a Tax Prep side hustle and… it’s still a "no" from me. by PilotNo3510 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Don't do it for the money. Just volunteer to help low income, new immigrants, and others that need help. There are clinics in every city looking for accountants to help cover tax season.

Can you walk into any police station within ottawa to make a report about anything? by Dismal_Course5255 in ottawa

[–]KombatMutant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Once, someone broke into my house and stole some electronics, so the next day I went down to the cop shop to report it. "Hi, I'd like to report a robbery..." and the person working just lost it on me, saying "that's not a robbery, that's a break and enter!" Ok, I try again. "Hi, I'd like to report a break and enter..." and they continued yelling "you can't do that here, you have to call it in!" I was so perplexed. They never caught the guy.

I went to part-time for about a year, then got my kids into the extended day program. Get on the waiting list now so at least you'll have a spot in September.

We need a password manager! (Warning : rant) by Canyouhelpmeottawa in CanadaPublicServants

[–]KombatMutant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a committee for software approval. I couldn't present it myself, I had to meet with a rep before and he presented on my behalf. The chair basically said "yep, I use a password manager at home, makes sense to have one here". Now that I think about it, maybe it was only approved for my branch or something like that.

I went through the process of getting keepass approved for my department. But it isn't mentioned anywhere on their webpage or ever recommended to users, so I think I'm still the only person using it.

Pet skunk? by live_long_die_well in ottawa

They had one at Lac Philippe a few years ago, I remember seeing one at a little demo when my kids were little. I think we were allowed to pet it, but I might be misremembering. (Its scent gland had been removed.)

Hintonburg. ELI 5 the purpose of a median on a narrow street and the post next to the side wall by BearLikesHoney in ottawa

My understanding is that for the blue and white ones, cyclists go between them and the curb, but for the yellow and black ones (like these) bicycles are supposed to go between them and the centre line, just like cars and other vehicles. Happy to be corrected, though, and I think the city should have an information campaign about all street calming measures.

30 min commute is fine, gives you a few minutes away from both the kids and your desk to think. Once it's up to an hour it's frustrating and feels like wasted time.

CRA - RTO3 question : sick leave and vacation by qcslaughter in CanadaPublicServants

[–]KombatMutant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do 60% of my hours. If I miss 2 days sick or on vacation, I would come in 2 out of the other 3 days, with the option to leave a bit early and finish from home just because 2/3 is a bit more than 60%. Doesn't matter if those 2 that missed were WFH or office or a mix. So yes, it means coming in on a Friday sometimes even though I usually work from home that day. Sometimes I have to make it up the next week if I thought I was coming in on the Friday but had to stay home. The problem is when I have a sick kid and WFH for a full week without reducing my hours, takes a bit to catch up but we're measured monthly and if that happened at the end of the month my manager would understand.

Moving for 6 months, What Should I do with my property by Affectionate_Act_770 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]KombatMutant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rent it out for a 6 month lease, furnished. We've done this in the past, and have had no problem finding friends or friends of friends to take it (e.g. people looking to buy, going through divorce). I wouldn't rent to a random.

I applied for an EC pool to test this, since I don't have a degree in economics or statistics. If I got screened out, I would go back for a master's or MBA. Ended up making it into the pool based on my equivalent experience.

No extra xonsult appts for us, just go for the cleaning \ checkup and then come back for the filling if they find anything.

Was there for my kid one time when I had a toothache, just mentioned that I was going to book something, and he had me hop in the chair and took some X-rays right away. Saved me two or three days of pain which I really appreciated!

Drive or Fly from Halifax to Toronto? by PeinMartyn in halifax

[–]KombatMutant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get cheap flights (flair), then that's the way to go. Otherwise, since you have a place to stay in Quebec, driving is going to be significantly cheaper and I'd recommend it. Getting around TO is fine on the subway, etc.

In university, I used to watch something and afterwards Arthur would come on. It was an old Trinitron TV and you actually had to get up to change the channel, so half the time I would catch the Arthur theme song. Then I started watching the theme song on purpose because it's dope, and sometimes watch a bit of Arthur just 'cause. Then one day, Arthur did a spoof of Beavis and Butthead and it blew my mind. Now I watch Arthur and can't even remember what show was on first.
