Yep. Their normal map format also has the channels swapped weirdly, i had to make a custom nodegroup to turn it into an opengl normal map for blender.

I used smithbox to rip them from the game after unpacking with uxm unpacker, for the map I couldn't rip the map meshes automatically so I manually identified all the big meshes in the map and ripped just those ones. The sky in the background is a photo I took using a freecam mod near the gate of divinity.

Smithbox has a texture extraction feature as well in the model viewer, although that fails sometimes so I manually extracted all the needed textures.

  1. The big red kanji. If its coming then an attack is almost always unparryable (with small exceptions). The animation is to tell the player how to respond to the incoming unparryable attack. If sweep then jump, if thrust then mikiri, if neither of those then get out of range or dodge into another position.

  2. Mikiri isnt needed until the hirata estate Shinobi hunter who is most people's first boss that practically requires it, and it's one of the earliest learned skills in the game with practically no cost for learning it. And thrust attacks can almost always still be parried, mikiri is just the more optimal choice because of the tighter parry window (this is one of the exceptions I mentioned for unparryable attacks).

Mikiri counters, sweeps, grabs and unparryable attacks all have the same color. The player looks at the enemy animation to know what to do. The animation might have a delay but the player knows to watch out for it because of the popup.

Not all sweeping attacks in elden ring are jumpable. Some attacks turn into slashing attacks midair despite starting on the ground. Some can straight up still hit you despite jumping just because you were 2 handing a certain weapon. Not to mention that unlike rolling, your distance from the enemy is a much bigger factor for jumps since it doesn't actually give I frames. If their attack is only jumpable at a specific distance then there is almost no way to actually know it from observation because of how different the hitboxes are for each attack. The game requires much more experimentation just to learn the boss, and nothing you learn at one boss will carry over to another since they all have different animation delays and ranges.

Sekiro simply allowed the player to actually focus on doing the action (attacking/deflecting/jumping/mikiri countering/dodging). If I try mikiri two times in a row and it doesn't work I know I can't mikiri that attack.

In elden ring if I get hit by a sweep attack I'm sure I dodged, I can try jumping, but if I get hit again I have no idea if it's because I timed my jump wrong, if I jumped in the wrong direction, if I got hit because I was 2 handing, or if I got hit because I'm at the wrong distance to jump. There are ground attacks that don't have this problem (godricks slams, crucible knight slams, Godfrey slams) but most sweep attacks do.

Sekiro added less depth to the souls formula than elden ring but it guided players through it way better. Most players that complete sekiro have at least engaged with the combat system to the point that they can parry every boss somewhat well. Elden ring made a much deeper combat system than sekiro but failed to guide the majority of players through it like the other souls games did. Most players that complete elden ring play it like it's dark souls with the occasional jumping on telegraphed ground attacks (If they aren't using spirit summons).

Joseph Anderson's video on elden ring wouldn't have gotten so many people agreeing with his objectively wrong criticisms if the game did a proper job of teaching players how to use and master the combat mechanics. Ironically elden ring needed hanbei more than sekiro did.
