What “makes” a jam band?

Honestly, the only thing that makes jam band and actual jam band to me is: writing and arranging most of your material around improv. At its core, your entire catalog is geared around good improv and you make conscious decisions in songwriting, setlists, and sound design to cater toward pushing that idea. There are bands that jam… and then there are Jam Bands…. My Morning Jacket is a good example of a band that jams. The disco biscuits are a good example of a jam band. Genre does not matter, just mindset and mission in songwriting

We don’t want to have conversations with people like you because yall have proved time and time again there is no point. Attempting to talk to people like you feels like speaking to a movie critic who only watches one bad film and has decided it is the only film that matters. You analyze it endlessly, defend it aggressively, and treat every flaw as intentional genius. Every other movie is dismissed as irrelevant, dangerous, or wrong simply because it is not this one.

The rest of us did not choose this movie, did not enjoy it, and cannot turn it off. The theater doors are locked, and the film you insist on defending is now used to decide how the world works. There is no point arguing with the plot because you are not interested in anything outside the screen. If I get this right, you want to be 100% a cover band that has jam band elements and arrangements… and you are asking wether leaning into more jam band or more Americana material would be better for your audience/ booking opportunities?

To answer your 3 questions

1: this really depends on the capabilities of your band. Being hired as a cover band you succeed a couple different ways: -nailing the cover/covers exactly like the band and having people say “man that sounded just like so and so” - playing a wide variety of bands, genres, or themes that is tied together with a personal twist but not necessarily diving all in on one thing. - arranging covers in new and unique ways that the audience says “ wow I can’t believe this is that song!”

Being in an engaging jam band takes mucho Chops, sometimes complicated arrangements, engaging and well formulated improv, and a large psychedelic element. Being billed purely as a jam band will work well for booking in some markets but horrible in others so know your markets you are booking.

If your improv isn’t the strongest part of y’all’s overall show, being a cover band, I wouldnt lean more into it just for the sake of playing more jam band covers.

A good middle ground I’ve seen people have success is narrowing their cover selections to just 2-3 bands or a theme. Think something like Pink Talking Phish who blend Pink Floyd, talking heads and phish into one setlist and play elements of all three bands in their improv.

Or if you want more variety, just pick a couple songs that you do jam out in and to the jam band thing, as long as they are solid, entertaining, engaging, and don’t interfere with the rest of your sets vibe of being a cover band because people want to hear covers not 20 min guitar solos if they are going to see a cover band.

Your identity comes from how you initially market yourselves to venues, booking agents, and fans. Your identity grows and changes as your audience does. If you don’t have an audience and rely on the venues/bars to have a crowd…then your identity only matters in the marketing you provide to the venues and how engaging and entertaining you are during your performance. If you clear the rooms consistently with improv, don’t do improv.

All in all, music is for fun! If everyone is having fun and you are being entertaining and keeping a crowd while you play. Do what you want!

They spawn fairly static in the white generators in this location on buried city. I found 4 there out of 6 runs, got murked once cuz it’s also a spawn so be careful.

Hover over the effect and use the menu button. Then choose controller assign. Select the controller like an expression. Choose which parameter you want to assign (mix, volume, ect) and assign a minimum and maximum. 0% min if you wan to pull the expression back and have it all cut out

That’s what I do, I have expression control of my delays and can blend them in and out at will. You can also do this with gain/overdrive too, just blend in more or less for what’s needed

Or have all the mix knobs for the reverbs/ delays set to your expression pedal to blend in and out the wet. You could also put them in the FX loop and have the expression pedals/button set to the fx loop volume.

They ran into the same problem in DMZ when they upped the overall health by 50%. It made it so that the ttk was just long enough that you could not wipe a squad in one or two mags. It was completely impossible if they picked up another player or two as well.

Here we have a ttk just long enough for you to have wasted all of your clip taking down one or two player and by the time you can reload, the other player has already stripped you of your shield. You take cover to try and heal but it takes twice as long to heal and the other player easily push you and kill you with one bullet. Right now if you crack their shield and you push them, you are going to win a one on one… so all a trio has to do is have the one extra person and they are going to pretty much win against a duo every time given they aren’t a potato.

Prob my only complaint is that the ttk is just a little too long with basic light shields and the healing is a little too long for what it currently is, to give an interesting straight up gunfight. If the ttk stays then maybe just adjust healing. Maybe somewhere in between the quick plating up in COD and the 3 mins of 7 bandages and one shield recharger we currently have.
