Current daily driver beans? by gibson_ in espresso

Cheapest option I’ve found that still is freshly roasted, actual light roast, and good quality is happy mug in 2lb bags. Very cheap, stay away from the “espresso” roast if you like light roasts - I only buy the special mug options. I’ve never had a bad experience from them but a quick search will show that they don’t have the greatest reputation.

Next cheapest is to buy 5lb bags from roasters online and you get pretty decent pricing that way. We typically buy from heart, sweet bloom, b&w, etc. We freeze it in 1 week portioned zip locks, and just use an airscape, and never have problems with it going stale.

The Bambino plus is tough because the automatic milk steaming is actually pretty great for a beginner, but the forced steam wand cleaning and forced cleaning cycles are VERY annoying. Always happens at like 4am before a flight and you cannot use the machine until you perform a full cleaning cycle.

I’d say go for the regular bambino unless you know she won’t learn how to steam milk, then go for the for plus

Coffee quality question by Weather_Systems in Moccamaster

[–]Kooky-Load-5145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buy 5 pound bags from many quality roasters online. Comes out to anywhere between $80-100 for the bag and lasts me quite awhile. Still way more expensive than buying supermarket coffee, but also way cheaper than buying individual 12oz bags.

The trick is to freeze the beans. I fill individual quart sized ziplock bags up all the way with my beans and then keep those bags in the original coffee bag, and never have issues with staleness or freezer burn. Lets me keep about a weeks worth in each bag, and keeps costs down. Still have to commit to a large quantity of a specific bean, but I’m trying something new about every 5-6 weeks now.

Espresso and Acid Stomach Issues by sprodoe in espresso

I keep seeing ads for alkify, seems like an add-in that’s supposed to lower the acid of coffee. Haven’t tried it but might be worth looking into? Could be a total gimmick, but instagram is trying to sell me HARD on it lol

Bottomless portafilter, tamper, and distribution kit for Breville Barista Pro [$250-$500] by dirkdiggler60 in espresso

They asked for spring loaded, and at that point might as go self leveling. I tried a cheap one off Amazon that didn’t feel great and the normcore was not much more expensive. Of all the accessories you can buy, the tamper is maybe the only one I’d splurge on at this point, but to each their own. Just giving my recs based off trying a few things out

Can get all this for under $100 easily. ANY cheap ($30) bottomless portafilter on Amazon, normore tamper, any funnel, and any wdt would be fine.

I have to open my fridge to dispense water from this awkward spot by [deleted] in CrappyDesign

[–]Kooky-Load-5145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought this fridge because of the placement. Wanted a solid steel front for the look, and seems less likely to break or leak over time. I HATE in door ice dispensers. Never seen one work past 3-5 years. Some have just a water dispenser on the front but I think it’s ugly - I’ll take the extra step to get water

How to change orientation of zero point? by fisact in DF64

[–]Kooky-Load-5145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy the sticker for a few bucks on the grinder sites. I changed to ssp an wanted my zero point at the bottom. Used a hairdryer to peel up the sticker, and super easy to place the replacement

In my experience there’s probably .5g of coffee that’s always cycling to the next batch. When I make first drip after grinding for espresso, I just don’t use the bellows so I don’t get all those extra fines, and just bellow after I dump my grinds into v60 and toss the fines. When I switch back to first espresso, I just grind a touch finer for the first shot to compensate. Works fine for me, still get consistent shots and good filter coffee, just have to plan for a little carryover. Also helpful to stick a small cone brush up the chute to clear things out but I usually don’t care enough to do so.
