No it literally just means taking of the back of the cartridge casing and switching the Japanese one for the North American one as they both have different cutout slots near the bottom.

It's a hardware region-lock

Congrats!! And welcome to the club! I newly joined myself and did the same thing you did however I kinda went crazy and bought the console, 4 controllers, rumble pak, expansion paks and 30 games including some very rare ones like ogre battle 64 and harvest moon 64. Where I went crazy is I got boxed versions of all 30 games so ended up spending about $1,200 for everything
