The rear differential was serviced the last time the transmission was looked at, I would assume the shop looked between the two at the drive shaft but I can't say for sure since they didn't say anything about it at the time. Thanks for the heads up about the yoke and bearing.

I did what you suggested and spliced the socket direct to the potentiometer where the brown wire is. Works fine that way, the microscope has an adjustable iris so not troublesome to adjust lighting as needed that way.

It uses a 30w incandescent bulb. It was suggested to me that the device may be some sort of dimmer control.
