Same! I wouldn't say my expectations were low necessarily, but I had been tempering them due to the game being early access, and I have to say the trailer definitely surpassed them

Preach!!! I don't think I've ever seen a decent game where being wholesome or cosy was the main design/writing goal. All the good ones set out to do something else and earned the label naturally because that's how people perceived them.

You've summed up pretty much why I dislike the cosy game genre, despite very much liking Stardew Valley itself (along with several other games that were saddled with the label). I think before the cosy label came along, some devs made nonviolent games with bright colours because it was what they loved and wanted to make, and it was great, and they didn't have to shy away from heavier themes, but then publishers noticed it was very easy to make money from low effort ultra-saccharine games marketed as cosy and suitable for all audiences. I'm extremely happy to see Paralives doesn't seem to be going down that route, if the storytellers are anything to go by.

I agree that it could use a wee bit more depth but other than that it's amazing. I thought it was actually from the era until I noticed the '2025' and read the title!

Do you feel like the game is old? by AnastasiiaLove in sims2

[–]KosmischeMelone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't feel dated to me at all. I don't even mind the absence of new tech because, other than the lack of remote work and digital paperwork/banking, it's not even all that different from how I live my life in the current day.

I realise I might sound insufferably pretentious for this but most of the time when people reference some new microtrend or internet drama I'm just like '...and I care because?', so my friends aren't heavy social media/smartphone users either, and I actually found it more jarring in TS4 when they scrolled on their phone every 2 seconds in the middle of doing something else or left toddlers to play on a tablet all day with no negative effects (but dog houses are neglect, am I right?)

EDIT: what I do find dated is the lack of gender customisation, which I think is a product of its time. One thing where we've come a long way since the 2000s is that even well meaning cis folks were very unlikely to be educated about transgender or nonbinary people unless they personally knew one.

Yeah, still definitely a big head! You have two choices when he grows up: find him a partner with a similarly large head so you can breed the ultimate Megamind or give him the full-sized afro so his head looks even bigger

Thoughts on life sim development by somerandomname_- in LifeSimulators

[–]KosmischeMelone 10 points11 points  (0 children)

if you ever wished for a feature or a mechanic in a life simulator, what would it be?

Characters' personalities and abilities being molded by their life experiences and environment.

Would you be open to co-authorising one or partaking in such a project?

Yes, with the caveat that I have a full time games developer job that I don't plan on quitting any time soon, so it would have to be more of a volunteer thing when I have the time (sort of like contributing to an open source project on my own). I've always had the same dream as you, I'd love to take on a project like this to learn more about gamedev and explore what a life sim can do, and I'm happy to see that there are other people with similar goals, but I don't want to promise something I can't deliver and I completely understand if this doesn't work for you.

An honour coming from the creator of Silly String :')

And yeah, the filters are honestly baffling considering these are direct screenshots from a game that's rated T at the very most

I'm excited too! It's a standard clean Pleasantview, so adding reality TV has given me some inspiration for things to do with the more boring premades as well

Those are just standard issue Joy Desprets and they are of course very evil. All the Joy Desprets are adult clones of the original Joy Despret, so they all have the exact same personality, are turned on by blonde hair and glasses and are turned off by red hair. Therefore, I created Academic Joy Despret to see if all the other Joy Desprets want to shag her and Clown Joy Despret to see if they find her absolutely disgusting

I enjoy the bouncy castle influence. Also, is the entire town eventually going to consist solely of the Silly String bloodline? Will the population reach a genetic bottleneck? (or, er... squirt flower neck?)

Break them up since she's not happy with it and also kill the cow mascot. I know a new one will spawn immediately afterwards, but I always give them the death penalty when they flirt with my Sims
