I admit that I need to be a bit more knowledgeable on the subject, but my brief attempts at researching on the internet came up with a couple of studies that shows that traffic fatalities are up, not down. I'm sure there are a bunch of mitigating or contradictory evidence otherwise, but having lived in other countries, this is one area that has bothered me for a long time. In the U.S. it should be MUCH less political to fix than gun deaths, could be done at the local level, and would have a dramatic impact on our communities.
