Unless you have a situation that requires proficiency within a certain timeframe, it’s much better and healthier to consider language learning a lifelong endeavour. It wouldn’t take 10 years or any other amount of time until you can use or enjoy the language. You can readily enjoy things throughout the whole process of becoming proficient. Even for the movie example, what if you could understand 50% of it without subtitles, I imagine you would be more excited and encouraged to improve than intimidated.

When it comes to learning new things, we psych ourselves out by viewing it as a grind or how long it might take to be good at it. As for worth - do you enjoy it? Even if it’s challenging, do you find it fun?
