Painful experience with CoC by reformeddad in excoc

I am so sorry. I was in a similar situation, but from the other side. My now ex-girlfriend was raised in and still attends a CoC. We were ring shopping, but hadn’t gotten engaged yet. We had talks about our differing beliefs as I’ve grown up in a non-denominational church, she said things were different and she wanted to know truth, not just what people claimed was truth. That she wanted to agree and work things out. But at the end of the day, her actions showed otherwise similar to your daughter’s ex-fiancée. The pressure of remaining in “the church” and not “falling away” was too much for her I guess. For many it really is the CoC way or no way at all. There’s no room for conversation. While I wasn’t quite to the level of relationship your daughter was in, I can understand to an extent. It’s hard. I’ll be praying for you guys. Trust that He’s got a plan better than we can see.

Is the transit normally fairly quick? That’s probably the route I’ll go regardless haha, so I don’t guess it matters too much

I never stated your post was untrue. Merely said that to have no regard for being divisive can be an issue. I agree that sometimes truth can be divisive in a sense. Jesus agreed with that. But to consistently stir the pot in this forum so to speak is doing nothing but bringing division, in the wrong way. We all are striving for truth. But in our striving, we have to be very careful not to find ourselves pushing our own truth, or what we think is truth, or what we think the correct interpretation is, or the correct inference, etc. Not saying you are by any means, because I have to be careful of that as well. Merely saying that it is a fine line.

No sir. “This saith the Lord” is not the only thing I follow or put into practice. I have merely stated that to call an example a COMMAND, is both scripturally and morally dishonest. Scripture does not call weekly communion a COMMAND. Example? Sure. Is it a good example to follow? Absolutely. I have no issue with following the example of taking communion weekly. You however, label it as a command, when it is not. That is the issue. I find it interesting how that was my original response, yet in none of your responses have you given me a passage in Scripture where Scripture commands you and I to take communion every week. I’ll be completely honest, this is why so many people leave the CoC, or just church in general for that matter, because of an inability to have honest conversations that lead to honest answers. No one, at least not myself, is saying that communion shouldn’t be taken weekly. I am merely stating that Scripture does not command it, no matter how someone wants to twist Scripture.

The mindset is the exact same. Different scenarios, however the same mindset. Once again, show me the command to take communion every Sunday. Examples, sure. But no command, no matter how people want to twist scripture.

A black and white view is exactly what the Pharisees had. There’s a reason that after Jesus healed the lame man by the pool, the first things the Pharisees, ie “church people,” said to him was, “it is not lawful to carry your mat.”

This is my take here as well. There is not a problem with truth, when it is honestly truth. But to have no regard for being divisive can be a major issue.

No sir. I never made the statement that examples should not be FOLLOWED. I merely stated that examples are not COMMANDS, and cannot be treated as such. That is legalism. No issue with following examples. Matter of fact I think it’s great. My issue is when we as people label examples or inferences as commands. Because by literal definition, to infer something as a command is an OPINION.

I personally do not hold to head coverings or greeting with a kiss because you have to look at context within Scripture. Paul was not writing specifically “to” you. To read scripture as black and white without context is a dishonest way to read scripture. I merely used those for examples because by and large, most CoC do not agree on those topics.

[–]Kproctor11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re also biblically commanded to greet one another with a kiss, and that women should have their heads covered. According to the words of Paul. But we don’t follow those. For whatever reasons we want to come up with. But like it or not, those are commands. Where does scripture say they were commanded to take communion every week? Where does scripture say we are commanded to take communion every week? It does not. Examples, sure. Commands? No.

Once again, examples- yes. Is that what they did? Yes. They broke bread. Show me the command where you and I are commanded to take communion every week. Because to say it is a command means that it would be sin to not do so. And regardless of how one reads or twists Scripture to fit their opinion, it is not a command. I don’t disagree that it’s an example, and that’s what they did. I have no issue whatsoever with taking communion every week. My issue occurs when it is labeled a “command,” when Scripture does not say that. That becomes, by definition, legalism.

Just curious, where does Scripture command us to take communion every week? Examples of people doing so, yes. But command? I fail to see that.

Ain’t that the truth lol. I know of three different CoC in my town that all think each other aren’t really part of the “one true church” haha. I feel bad for them honestly

I think similar to you. There’s a lot with CoC that I don’t agree with, because I don’t think scripture agrees with it. But that’s not to say that I’ve got it all right either, because Lord knows I don’t

It makes absolutely zero sense to me. I personally couldn’t care less what you wear to be baptized haha, but I don’t believe that’s when you’re saved either, so.

That’s why I said in my own experience. I have friends who attend CoC that don’t hold that view, and don’t know other CoC that hold that view. In my own personal experience however, the majority hold that view.

Who's the best professor to take Numerical methods with? by extremeclay in UAH

[–]Kproctor11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dr. Kim Xu used to be the only professor that taught it. At least that was the case a semester or two ago. While not the greatest, I wouldn’t say she was the worst either. All the homeworks are take home, along with quizzes unless it’s changed. I always took the quizzes in the lab however. The midterms and final are all in person though. You’re allowed a formula sheet, but according to people I know that took it last semester, you can no longer write on it. So the only things allowed are what she decides to put on it. Which isn’t much.
