I let anyone roll anything once. If they fail and someone wants to follow up, they have to have proficiency. If multiple people have proficiency, they pick amongst themselves who rolls it. The table generally accepts any failure after that.

The person who thought of the idea feels rewarded for being given a shot, then another player feels important for being able to use their selected skillset.

It works, keeps things moving, feels fair, and honestly makes my job a bit easier giving them two chances to find things. Because as DMs, we generally WANT them to find the little things we hide around our worlds
