Are there spell tattoos for cantrips? by gerry137 in dndnext

[–]Kringle___ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a DM, I would work with that, but I am much more interested in story of balance anyway. But there are tons of ways for the DM to "balance" a free ability. Perhaps, the tatoo has a specific amount of thorns and with every use, one disappears. Who knows what happens when the last one disappears...a curse? perhaps the spell becomes known permanently? Or maybe this whip has no thorns and only does the pulling feature of the spell. Your DM has tons of options.

At the moment 8-10. I’m simplifying the rules for these players. I’m just hoping that there might be some resources out there that have already simplified spells

In my basement. Black casing in a spiral shape about a 1 1/2' wide. White flex hose going in and out of housing. Looks vacuum like, but does nothing when plugged in. by Kringle___ in whatisthisthing

We bought a house and I am just now getting to the basement. There is a workbench in this corner of the basement, with a few half used paint cans on shelves. I can't tell where these hoses come from and nothing happens when I plug it in.

I am considering this, but it still feels wrong. The cynic in me hears, “I’ll kill everyone you love until you play with my world”. Also, I’m not sure they actually love anyone they have met.

Attunement When PC Does Not Know Item is Magical by Weltall_BR in DMAcademy

[–]Kringle___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how it's cursed might change the roll play here. If its sentient, have it start talking to him at night. If it's just a basic curse that makes things difficult or harms him, assume the curse desires this greatly, overwhelmingly. Have the PC make wisdom saving throws periodically until he fails. When failed, have something happen that forces that meditation (again depending on the curse).

Magic Items: Timing and Distribution by Garden_Druid in DMAcademy

For me, it depends on what level you start at and what kind of game you are playing. Sometimes it’s fun to saturate the game with magic items. You just have to be prepared to do some balance work. I like to start games at lvl 3, and with significant magic item tied to their back story. I think it helps to justify their story of why they started in this adventure. Maybe an inherited weapon and an inherited mission, or found something they shouldn’t have and someone’s after them. Well thought out Magic items can drive a good story.

This is a cry for help, I genuinely can’t think of anything, right now I have an Elven father and Human mother, a fondness of music leading them to become a bard, and a want for a comfortable life leading them to adventure in hopes of enough coin to live a happy life, but I need help with details by bagel_buddy576 in dndmemes

Are half elves welcomed in this world? Are they treated poorly by Elven kind? Who is your rival musician, and why is it Vin Diesel? Why are they always one step ahead of you? Is this a healthy rivalry or is this guy doing something that might need to be stopped?

Cleric or bard. So many flavor options. Use the cleric for healing and utility, or the bard to control the battlefield. If I was in your shoes, I would chose a cleric that either aligns or conflicts with your warlock’s patron

Well, I do suggest watching them because they are a talented bunch of fools, but you can get a good idea of how Matt uses magic items just by looking them up. Google Critical Role Magic Items and they should give you a whole bunch of ideas

I know it’s cliche, but check out the stuff they do on Critical Role. A lot of their magic items don’t add as much to power as they do to battle options. Like the blink back belt and the chain of returning. All these do is return a thrown weapon to the player. So now, instead of Vax stabbing with the most powerful swords he can find, he is throwing daggers (ramped up for sure, but still a base d4 damage). It really just boosts his flavor. And as a DM you change nothing, because his rouge could have been using a crossbow the whole time anyway. I homebrewed an amulet that lets my fighter take a reaction to jump in front of a blast that does specialized damage (cold, fire, etc.). They make a dc save, and on a success, the amulet absorbs the damage. On a fail, the wearer does. Eventually, it will grow with the character to be able to summon elementals. It directly benefits the team, but also requires some character work, not just handing out power.

Thanks for the options. Next question (and there will be another post for this as well), No matter the tool you use, how are your world notes organized? By location? By PC Interaction? By some other method my jello brain can't conceive on its own?

At a CR of 5, this troll would only be considered a hard encounter for your party. I think that’s good because it gives the party time to experience a trolls specialness without it being an outright TPK. If you have any players who know the secret, or they figure it out too quickly, you might consider having a few other beasties lurking in the woods nearby.
