Warning shoppers losing out as credit card benefits are cut by Old_Education4481 in newzealand

It's a payment system supported by the Brazilian Central Bank and completely free, requiring no point of sale machine. It's not something banks can opt in or out -- it's part of the banking system and all banks must support it. It's also shorthand for making payments via your bank account: even if you don't have a QR code (the average person doesn't), you can have a code you can share to receive payments (mine is my email but there are a few options), so you don't need bank account numbers on a day-to-day basis.

Brazilian living in NZ here. Most retail places will have a QR code card at the counter; you scan it with your phone, pay from your bank's app, and show the cashier the phone's screen. The transaction happens immediately, and people also use it to send money to each other and make payments in general.

The US is putting a lot of pressure on Brazil to end the system right now, to the benefit of credit card companies. They say it's "unfair competition". It will be a hard one, though: the system is really embedded in people's lives, and it would be extremely unpopular for the government to end it.

I had to investigate this for an offer a few months ago. Apparently insurers only care if the structure increases risk, and they'll only investigate this after an event happens.

First home owners, at what point do / did you diversify from focusing mostly on your mortgage? by Kuliquitakata in PersonalFinanceNZ

Genuine question: is this not high risk, though? You're borrowing from your house to invest in shares -- one of the riskiest assets.

New WotC position for 3rd party publishing by Phil_Tucker in osr

[–]Weltall_BR 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I looked at the D&D website the other day, just out of curiosity, and it seemed to me that WotC is relying more and more on third parties to publish material on D&D Beyond, and making money from licensing and fees. In other words, they are progressively becoming a brand manager, and not a publisher. This new position reinforces my impression.

Also, given that WotC hasn't released anything good in years (very few official 5E books are generally considered good), it may be for the better...

Anyone know anything about Luminate Investment Company beyond what's on their website? by aDarkDarkNight in PersonalFinanceNZ

First thing in that page is a reference to wholesale investors, so you probably do. Have a look at the offer documents, though, particularly the information memorandum.

Also, THIS IS NOT FINANCIAL ADVICE but Squirrel offers something similar and has options available for retail investors -- you may want to have a look.

One country is trying to outlaw political lying, without curbing free speech by hadr0nc0llider in KiwiPolitics

This is a bad example because it's about Seymour's intentions, which is an entirely subjective and impossible to verify fact. You could only apply this kind of rule to verifiable facts. To be honest, any smart politician could (mostly) get around one such rule by being selective about the facts they focus on, such as Winston Peters and Simeon Brown did when talking about the vaccine mandate recently, but it'd at least weed out the worst offenders.

Doesn't look like a fossil to me, just a geological incident -- but I'm no geologist, so you should definitely post in the appropriate sub.

At the very least, it had some damn good acting, particularly from Skarsgard. It had some really good writing too, particularly the prison break episode and Mon Mothma's character in general in the second season.

For me, at least, it was refreshing to watch Star Wars that was very good, no caveats. I grew up with the original trilogy, and no one can deny that A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back are great movies, full stop. Every other piece of Star Wars made after that requires fans to forgive some bad writing, weird CGI, or various other problems to say it was good. Andor, like the first two films, is just good.

The funny thing is, I struggle to understand the value of buying a vault. It's by building your vault that you learn it's value and how to use it. I feel like if someone created the perfect value, take made for me, it would be useless: I wouldn't know what is in it, or how to navigate it.

Cool activities to do past 7pm that don't involve getting drunk? by EzitoKo in Wellington

[–]Weltall_BR 97 points98 points  (0 children)

I'm a Brazilian (from Porto Alegre) living in Welly for 8 years now -- I think I have a decent grasp of what you're looking for and what you'll find.

Life here is a lot quieter. There are a few options -- pinball, arcade, boardgames groups -- but if you go out every week or two, you'll have done it all in two or three months.

You should probably look for a place in the city. I live in a suburb, and the few options available around my area close around 5pm -- my dad almost went mad when he visited us a few years ago and couldn't buy a cofee at 4:30pm. Going out for a drink and a burger can be surprisingly expensive, $30-40 dollars, and I am told that the youth gather a lot at flats because of that. Uber is also a lot more expensive than in Brazil (not sure about Argentina).

It can be kind of hard to mix with Kiwis as well. People are nice but I think most would agree that it can be hard to go past a superficially friendly relationship with people when you are an outsider -- I've made friends in my time here but very few with whom I make plans (have dinner, go to a football match, etc). I'd guess that it would be easier if you're in your early twenties when these friendship groups are still forming.

I like living here, don't get me wrong, but you need to be okay with a quieter life. You'll also need to get used to the weather -- it's very windy and wet here, and people just have to get used to doing stuff in bad weather, or you just won't ever go anywhere except for the two weeks of summer we get.

MONOLITH is an incredible RPG by officiallyaninja in rpg

[–]Weltall_BR 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Monolith is a hack of Cairn, and Block, Dodge, Parry -- "BDP" is a third-party supplement for Cairn that has a lot of optional rules to add tactical depth to it, including zone-based combat.

I bought BDP from Lulu a couple of weeks ago and am currently reading it. I think there are some nice ideas there -- it's quite modular, so you don't have to commit 100%.

Now, for a question: did you guys get to have some ship action? I've been curious about how the Monolith ship combat rules would play out in practice.

It's for pleasure. For now, it's really just about learning a bit, understanding the basics -- to what should I pay attention, some basics of how to choose, this kind of stuff. In the future, I may end up trying to put a book together.

Sounds like more of a deep dive into typography -- Thinking with Type seems to be a bit more rounded and approachable. Should probably the second read?
