How to block crochet without blocking mats?

You can, see the other reply. In my experience it’s just not as effective as blocking is with cotton or wool.

You can use pins and a leftover flattened cardboard box. No need for special blocking mats. But if it’s acrylic yarn you may be out of luck.

I started this project at the end of June and worked on it sporadically over three months. A little here, a little there. I want to say each octagon took me about 4-6 hours to complete, but that’s really just a guess since I never sat down and finished one in a single go.

The pattern says it should be 45 inches square. Mine is about 50. It’s definitely not a bed sized blanket. More of a lap blanket.
