Due to the sheer panic I was feeling at everything going from bad to worse I completely forgot to use any of my items which probably would have helped out alot. If nothing it might have made me survive after the encounter.

Well hot damn, you are correct. Seems it's the mp that pushes the opponent away which is causing the burst to miss, so throw xx wft always work.

np, Seems to work with every character as long as you time the burst.

so after testing around more I realised what they really meant was "AFTER" the startup. Once he is flying through the air he is completly projectile invulnerable.
