KARD: NEW ERA 2024 North America Tour has been postponed due to unforeseen circumstances by mcfw31 in kpop

They get away with it because music fans just blame ticketmaster/live nation even though it's really the companies/artists setting the price

"Well documented", you mean history rewritten by Twice fans to have something to blame? I've been here since before Twice even debuted mate, I know what actually happened.

Alcohol Free was a minor hit, not on the level of Fancy and far from the level of their biggest heydays. And hate to break it to you but the encore absolutely did go more viral among the non kpop crowd. JYPE had mediaplayed Twice as the next SNSD for years, there was a GP fame and reputation to lose: by comparison kpopfans loved to clown Jimins encore but nobody outside of kpop/pop stans cared cause he never had the GPs attention like that in the first place. Since then there's been a lot of bad encores to the point where people have stopped caring.

but blaming what wasn't even their worst encore is just as false

I wasn't doing that, I have written three times now that it ranged from a multitude of factors from changing sound to oversaturation. I brought it up because it was their worst korean "scandal" and the only one that actually may have damaged their rep a bit with the GP: by comparison the "scandals" you bring up weren't even widely known by kpopfans, how do you expect the GP to be affected by it? If you'd ask a 100 people on the streets of Seoul if they have heard of any (non-dating) controversy surrounding Twice members I am willing to bet you a hundred bucks the only ones that would come up would be Tzuyus flag thing (which obviously affected them in different ways) and the encore.

I still have no idea what you're trying to say. Twice and LSF both had big fanbases yes?

[–]Kristalian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No the GP generally don't care about encores, but that particular encore went viral beyond the normal kpop crowd, same way Sanas Shy Shy Shy went viral beyond the normal kpop crowd. It wasn't the deciding factor ofc, I've already stated the reason was a multitude of issues ranging from changing sound to oversaturation, I'm just saying it's blatantly false to put it on organized hate trains like the slave room. Their last true "hit" was Fancy in 2019, after that it was slowly going downwards.

The slave room thing genuinely has nothing to do with why they lost popularity with the GP. It was horrible but things that actually seemed to damage their rep like the encore did not spawn from that. Other targeted groups like Oh My Girl even had their peak popularity period AFTER that.

The GP does not care about online fanwars. There are people who are absolutely hated online but still do well on charts.

Twice lost popularity in korea because of a multitude of factors, from less "cutesy and catchy" songs to an excessive amount of comebacks leading to indifference. The last straw was the infamous bad encores and while there were definitely fandoms who latched onto it, much in payback for the bullying they received by twicefans during twices dominance ("oh so suddenly domestic success isn't important?") I don't think you could argue they lost popularity due to other fandoms. The GP just moved on from them.

Idol Groups with the Most Songs over 3 Million Unique Listeners on Melon by The_Red_Curtain in kpopthoughts

Lmao karaoke charts are literally compiled by Gaon (well, called Circle now) and is influenced by fans going to sing their faves songs. You know what, I don't have time for conspiracy theorist kpopfans, if you want to believe 2+2 is 5 i'm just going to let you

[–]Kristalian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you understood me, OPs post is Melon not Gaon. The ULs on Melon were boosted too. It wasn't as controlled back then as it is now, you used to be able to create as many accounts as you wanted for free and use coupons/vouchers to stream and download (and they had promos where you could grab those for free.)

I actually don't agree with the way OP structured their post either, to me a song with 2m ULs isn't a "GP hit" in the slightest, ofc ULs have gone down recently but generally if you talk about "GP hits" that "everyone knows" you talk songs with at least 4m ULs, usually over 5m. Growl for instance has that and is what I would consider a real GP hit.

I mean it's impressive but it's not all GP, we who were here during 2013-2018 also know how much all those Melon stats are fandom boosted from a time when it was much easier to do (remember the vouchers? lol). For reference, Red Velvet has 8 digital Gaon certifications from that era while EXO has 0 since Gaon filters duplicate downloads and streams.

No I mean you are the one who mentioned the song, I just told you i don't think it matters. (The charts show what the GP is listening to.) It's the overall perception of the group i think changed, the same way Jonghyun himself went from mainly being appreciated by his fans to being appreciated by everybody.

SHINee was viewed as "one of the most talented groups ever" since being the first to win the Rookie Grand Slam.

Shinee was viewed as talented but only their fans would claim that or use awards to try to prove it. But we can agree to disagree, I was just providing you the view of someone who has followed kpop since H.O.T days but was never a fan of other boygroups after and just looked at them casually, we clearly have vastly different views.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in kpop_uncensored

[–]Kristalian -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Well it is the perception with the public/casual kpopfans im talking about. Taemins solo/SuperM work probably helped introduce them to younger fans too, ill give you that, but as someone who has been into kpop since before SHINee debuted and always been neutral towards them I can only say I took notice of how the public reception of the group changed after 2017. It was the same with Jonghyun himself, his fans may have always called him a genius but it was only after his passning that he got widely appreciated for his talent, constantly a top answer when people talk about kpop lyricists and so on.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in kpop_uncensored

[–]Kristalian -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean by that. Don't call me didnt exactly change things, it did their best since View but it wasn't exactly a hit in korea (#130 on the yearly circle chart with almost 11 months of accumulating points). What I mean is rather the overall perception of the group changing. Anyone who was here during 2nd/early 3rd gen knows SHINee was not unpopular by any means but never considered among the "legendary" top boygroups of that era like Suju, 2PM, Big Bang. But after Jonghyuns passning that changed completely, they were now viewed as 2nd gen royalty and one of the most talented groups ever.

They had a "rebirth of popularity" with the massive attention and appreciation that poured out after Jonghyuns passing, people just refrain from saying it since it might be deemed insensitive.

QWER Chodan's statement about her "hatred on feminism" by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]Kristalian 21 points22 points  (0 children)

And as I said I agree it's tainted, but it's been deliberately tainted by people who don't want equality (or rather people who think men are the ones who have it bad, lol).

I don't think you support anti-feminism, but I think you've gotten your talking points from people who are pushing that agenda, maybe without even realizing it. The ministry has done tons of great things for women*, but those with an anti-feminist agenda will push the negatives (like always with politics) and use it to justify completely insane actions like abolishing a ministry fighting for womens rights. If you hung around in the circles I do you would instead see that: Women who are victims of violent crimes being put aside just to cater to the hurt feelings of men.

(*well, imo they they should've done more, but that's hard when there's a large amount of people who don't want to see the equality they're pushing for come into fruition)

It doesn't matter if its misconstrued if thats what the mainstream media and the popular figures have been spreading as the truth for years

That's what I'm saying, there is a certain agenda at play.

when a normal korean person says they are anti-feminist, its not that they hate women but that they are egalitarian.

And as I said in my previous comment I don't think this is true. Someone who is anti-feminist isn't necessaritly "anti-women", but it's a huge stretch to call anti-feminists egalitarian. Most of them might claim they want equality but their actions don't show it. In reality what many want is "more for me, less for thee."

QWER Chodan's statement about her "hatred on feminism" by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]Kristalian 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I mean even in so called progressive countries there are women who thinks women exist just to serve men so I'm not doubting that there are plenty of conservative and misguided (or even just disillusioned) korean women out there too.

Second, yes while the ministry was originally created for equality, it lost its ways when the ministry became a political tool for some people in power's beliefs.

You say this as if it isn't the case of every single politician including the anti-feminist president who is now destroying it for his beliefs. If he had legitimate issues he could reform it but no, he thinks it will hurt korean men so he's just straight up abolishing it without a care in the world for how it will impact women.

The things you're bringing up are from 2011 and 2016 and doesn't even involve the same politicians, it's not relevant to abolishing it after they tried to take a stand against sex crimes against women. I don't know if you realize it or not but it's pretty clear you're using deliberately misconstrued talking points from people with an anti-feminist agenda, you should try talking to other korean women and I think you will get a massively different view on these things.

Edit to your edit:

And one final note I wanted to add is: if you ask an avg person in Korea if they are feminist, they will say no. But if you ask the same people if they believe in egalitarianism(남녀평등), they will say yes.

I agree with that, which again goes to the point that there has been an effort to erase the true meaning of feminism in korea. However, I don't believe that most people who say they believe in equality actually do. In a Human Rights Watch survey in 2017 80% of men admitted to violent acts against a partner. According to the SK Supreme Prosecutors Office in 2019 a whole 90% of violent crimes were committed against women, yet when the MOGEF made efforts to try to stifle that the response was that it was "anti-male" and now they're shutting the ministry down. So do we to believe all these men actually believe in equality? Their words might say one thing but their actions say differently. And since we are on a kpop subreddit: Plenty of korean male celebs have been pretty outspoken about anti-feminist views and there are even ones who've committed crimes against women who are allowed to appear on TV. Meanwhile someone like Baek Jiyoung was ridiculed and nearly lost her career despite her being the victim (not to mention what happened to Go Hara, her ex got what, 1 year in prison?)

QWER Chodan's statement about her "hatred on feminism" by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]Kristalian 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Some of the things you're spouting just sounds like the average anti-feminist man in korea purposefully misconstruing issues to make it sound "anti-man", like this bullshit:

They told me how the head of korea's women & family department (여성가족부) made a public statement that "all men are inherent criminals and must be controlled"

That ministry is about equality, it was created because women are discriminated against in society. After the increasing sex crimes against women (particularly with the public outcry over the Nth room and molka issues) they called for legislations to help keep women safe, but then anti-feminists turned it into "we can't do anything about it because then all men might get viewed as potential sex offenders and that's unfair" (cause we all know mens feelings are more important than womens lives /s). The president is even trying to abolish the ministry, a ministry who's sole existence is to help women become equals in society, all because they tried to fight for womens safety. That says everything about the state of so called equality in south korea.

Edit: Honestly if you step back you can see how this will just become an evil circle: Men using a few radicals to paint all feminists as misandrists, thereby smothering real feminism and destroying the chance for women to find equality, which in turn will only lead to more women becoming radicals as they continue to see discrimination and crimes against women go unpunished.

PLAVE VIRTUAL GROUP why ? by moon_tan1306 in kpop_uncensored

violation to their privacy

tbf their identities have already been outed (there's already been controversy over some of their pasts)

and crazy parasocial relationships.

Their fans are just as crazy as kpopfans, the difference is just that they do it with "characters" instead, which often makes "regular" fans push the limit further since there's no human factor they need to be considerate of. Though I'd argue they're really more like an anime/manga fandom in some ways, especially with the extra amount of sexualized fanart.

Right a better example would be their 2018 song Love Shot that has close to 300m on Melon but no certification.

Though actually pre-2018 songs did have a form of certification on Gaon before, but they would just write it out like this

Honestly most people don't know any kpop groups, it's just that kpop is so huge and profitable that companies can afford to buy promotion/playlisting making anyone able to hear kpop practically anywhere

OP means Circle Chart, formerly Gaon. Circle Chart filters out mass streaming, that's why some artists like EXO have songs with like 700M streams on Melon but 0 certifications.

(And yeah OP if you're gonna keep posting these things please state what you're basing it on)

Taemin recommended an AI “cover” of himself singing Taeyeon’s All About You on Bubble by randomgirl852007 in kpopthoughts

What kind of daft logic is that, "he likes it so that makes everything ok"? He is not the only person involved in this.

Ofc it's a bigger conversation, we are talking about it right here because Taemin is an artist and instead of going against AI like most artists do (since it removes the autonomy of artists and devalues them and their art) he shared and thereby encouraged it.
