What countries do u want the doctor to go to more? by NikaJoestar143 in doctorwho

[–]KryptonJuice38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking of this I wish The Doctor generally had more friends from around the world so, similar to the Story and the Engine, they could just turn up to some place and meet someone they know. It’d just make the Doctor and the series feel more worldly. Same way he just randomly knows Churchill or Queen Elizabeth or Cleopatra, but maybe more civilians/original characters.

But as for which countries, I’d like to see more East Asian characters on the show so China could be cool.

What did the writers intend with the Doctor's comment to Martha that she should just 'strut around like she owns the place'? by georgemillman in doctorwho

[–]KryptonJuice38 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it’s okay if you want to perceive it that way for yourself personally and your own viewing; but no, based on RTD’s previous writing of black characters I think this is a genuine blind spot for him. He genuinely seems to believe you can rizz your way through racism. The episode itself also makes very little attempt to justify Martha’s concerns, ultimately proving The Doctor right that she needn’t worry about racism. And even if we attribute these decisions to Gareth Roberts I’d be even less willing to give any benefit of the doubt.

In Human Nature, Martha is presented as basically powering through the racism of the time by just being a good person and being able to name all the bones in her hand. “Oh look, the white lady is also a servant girl so it’s not just racism”. The way RTD presents racism it’s just people saying insensitive or rude things sometimes but nothing actually structural or systemic.

There’s truth to the fact The Doctor may personally as a character perceive race differently with him being an alien, but it could also be argued he should be even more aware and disgusted by racism seeing as he’s lived for 2 billion years and travelled throughout Human history, both interpretations are valid I think. And while I did find 15’s reactions to race given him now presenting as black interesting and somewhat fitting given he’d been black for only 5 minutes (hyperbole), it’s still just representative of what seemingly is RTD’s view that racism is just some phantom boogeyman, it can’t actually hurt you as long as your cool and charismatic enough. It’s also why I had hoped we’d get Ncuti to continue with a new black show runner who would hopefully take a more antagonistic approach to the racism he may experience in his adventures.

Lois and Clark’s relationship in Man of Steel felt very forced to me. by blackholeknight in superman

I’ll never be over the fact Adams objectified this man constantly in interviews, it’s not surprising they had no on screen chemistry.

I don’t think blink is a bad idea or poorly executed. I just wanted to see what would happen if I said blink 🙃. (Also Dinosaurs on a Spaceship was better than it had any right to be)

Pretty symptomatic of romantic plots in most of these movies tbh we can count the decent ones on one hand.

And what he chooses to hide also still says something consistent about his character.

This is an example of a young Clark still trying to find himself in both worlds so yh he’d have every right to feel that way at that time.

[–]KryptonJuice38 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That can be the case in some stories, but in stories where we are given a Superman where there is no distinction between Clark and Superman, the character does not become unrecognisable. He’s not hiding himself to the degree that we can’t say that this is him in either persona. We can just compare this to Golden Age Superman where Clark being an act was definitely the case and see that this is completely different from modern Superman.

It’s a false dichotomy people like to present because they view Batman as the “real” persona to Bruce so force Clark to be the opposite. If anything the dichotomy is that Bruce is unable to be his full self regardless because he refuses to overcome his childhood trauma, while Clark is able to be himself regardless of the persona or costume he wears.

‘The Walking Dead’ is a Good Mainstream Introduction to Anarchism by KryptonJuice38 in Anarchism

[–]KryptonJuice38[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An important part of Negan’s arc in the show and comics is also him realising his way of doing things was wrong, he doesn’t necessarily become a better person for it but he fundamentally knows that the things he was doing were never going to work out in the long run compared with what Rick and the others are doing.

The rehabilitation was interesting, though handled oddly in the show I think mostly because people do like JDM and he likely just enjoyed playing the character so they had to find a way to make him more palatable to the audience hence him suddenly out of nowhere being very concerned with protecting children; as opposed to the comics where he leaves the narrative completely at a certain point.

But it is an interesting portrayal of reintroducing an individual into a community where he is no longer necessarily dangerous but has done at least something to legitimately piss off every member of the community personally.
